Positives and negatives from yesterday

It’s never as bad or as great as it seems. Last week the sky was falling, this week LSU fans are complaining that they’ll have to beat UGA and Bama twice.
Here is the good and bad I saw from yesterday.
The bad:
1. There were no long TD “drives”. LSU scored it’s first TD on a short field after Delpit’s INT, The second TD was a 71 yard pass. LSU was not able to drive the length of the field with consistently good offense.
2. Joe Burrow is inconsistent. He missed several throws and on the early completion to Jefferson that was reviewed, had he made a halfway decent throw it would have been a TD. A bad throw forced a circus catch that had to be reviewed.
3. The defense dissappeared in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. Auburn ran and threw at will.
4. Way too many penalties. Sloppy and undisciplined at times.
5. Play-calling was inconsistent. In the last 3 games, the LSU’s play-calling has looked very good early, but not great afterwards. This is a weird trend.
6. Tackling on Whitlow was spotty. I had never heard of this kid. He looked great. I hope he is great. Bama and UGA have some very good backs and poor tackling will spell disaster.
The good:
1. The Oline took a huge step forward. That was a great Dline and the LSU line more than held their own, especially in pass protection. Getting Charles back and Deculus to RT has solidified the line for now. Hopefully they can stay healthy and build on this. Getting Magee back will certainly help.
2. Joe Burrow is clutch. This is one of the greatest attributes a QB can have and it can’t be taught. When plays absolutely had to be made down the stretch, he made them. He also has a short memory and didn’t dwell on mistakes from earlier in the game. He’s only got 3 starts and will get better and better, but the intangibles are through the roof.
3. Clock management was perfect. Also, all the little coaching things were on point. LSU ran hurry up after a questionable completion in an attempt to avoid replay, and O called timeout to allow a replay (which inexplicably never came) after the missed call on the fumble. Offensive play-calling was spotty at times, but all of the other nuances were very tight in a tough environment.
4. Rashard Lawrence was unblockable at times.
5. As a team, LSU seemed unaffected by the environment. Props to the coaching staff. I’ve seen many an LSU team go to Auburn and fall apart.
6. Cole Tracy may be the best kicker in the nation. He’s obviously very accurate, but the last question I had about him was could he make a clutch kick with a big game in the line. Not only can he do it, but he can do it in one of the toughest venues in the country. The guy is a weapon.
7. Grant Delpit may be the best safety we’ve had this century, which is crazy, because there have been so many good ones.
8. Devin White is so damned good.
9. Watching Auburn’s DB’s grab and hold every other play makes you really appreciate the LSU secondary. They were great yesterday. Talented and well-coached.
The big questions left for this team to answer, are can they avoid being upset by lesser teams, and does the offense have enough firepower to hang with Bama and UGA.

There were no negatives yesterday you nega-Tiger. You basically lose all credibility and are no longer a fan. Coach O walks on Gatorade and in 1 game erased his entire past.

I like and agree with your assessment. But for frick sake will everyone stop pumping up UGA!

Absolutely love how versatile Phillips, Delpit, and Stevens are. They all play all over the field.

Burrow is too inconsistent..maybe hell wattle in, but his completion % MUST go way up or this team will falter.
We cant kuve off the running and must convert a higher % to keep the defense off the field.

Solid evaluation. Way more good than bad right now. Only question mark I’d add is that something seems off timing-wise when we attempt a screen pass. We’ve had 2 knocked down by D-linemen. Can be fixed.

Great assessment - I only questioned play calling on 3-4 plays.
Looked like Orgeron only got involved on 4th downs - go or no go?...I suspect O let E call the game without meddling.
That's encouraging, and cannot be under estimated considering O's history at Ole Miss and that he admitted to micro-managing at OM and last year with Canada's Offense. If he can maintain that disciple and "Manage", this team will do well.
Offense will have to show consistent, week to week progress for us to be optimistic about beating GA or AL.

The positives is we have beaten 2 top 10 teams without playing a perfect game. So we have potential to play even better with some minor adjustments.
Most important thing is to avoid let down against lesser teams. Beat everyone you are supposed to in remaining games and split games left where we are underdogs. That should be our minimum, realistic goals. That would put us at 11-1 at worst. I could live with that!

My biggest issue with the play calling was we have no intermediate passing game. Everything was short or long, but I did love taking the shots down field. Also, zone read isn't as effective if the QB doesn't pull it. Burrow ran on designed run plays except for one pull, which was successful.

I wld add our punter did an excellent job. AU started deep in their end several times... he is a weapon as well.

Two points on the quarterback play. I don’t think he was stepping into his throws quite as good as he should, as many of his passes were high, but that can be corrected. His designed runs could be better executed also. He’s only going to get better though!

The biggest problem I saw was our guys look a little bit out of shape; I'm hoping more practice will get them ready as the schedule opens up more
We have the talent to win a national title, but O and co have a lot of work to do to get us there because we're not a championship team.... yet.

I’m still not decided whether the larger issue is qb accuracy or wr separation.

This is the only thing I slightly disagree with. The first two games concerned me, but I liked what Ensminger was trying to do yesterday. The only play I really hated was the QB draw on 3rd down on the final drive. Auburn still has a pretty damn good defense, too.
Great assessment overall.

Yes, this is a head-scratcher. The D looked gassed in the 2nd quarter. Not sure what could be causing it.

On the big plays burrows was on target. No turnovers. You probably could not tell on TV but they were mauling our receivers every play
