When a young person signs a letter of intent it should be explained that this is a contract. There should be teeth in the contract and a number assigned to each year. If an athlete decides to leave early or enters the portal there should be a buyout assigned to the remainder of their contract. The only exception is a career ending injury. I know some ranters may say that is too harsh but watch the portal transfers vanish. Also if a player decided to declare early he/she will be benefiting from the time they were associated with the university. In the new age of the NIL and liberal transfer portals universities should protect themselves with such verbage. Just a thought!

Won’t happen. They could implement a transfer season per se, close the portal from spring to the end of Dec. would prevent some of this crap mid-year. Buyout for transfers no happening tho bud

Except it’s not a contract.

Why do we allow coaches to run around Willy nilly and void their contracts but players cannot do the same?

The portal and opting out should only be allowed for a few months after the end of the regular season. After that time period has elapsed you are then committed for the next season. It's a bitch move by players to leave during the season. You're essentially are quitting on your fellow players.

Contract require consideration.

LSU proved them with an education and training in exchange for their labor.

Saying they owe us something for that education and training beyond that labor just doesn’t work.

Considering football is extremely profitable we can’t sit here and argue that the training and education is worth more than the labor and thus they owe us something for no longer laboring for us.

Why don't fans support capitalism when it comes to college athletes?

You do realize that scholarships are yearly? Leaving or transferring isn’t breaking the agreement.

It's weird. They don't support it in the pros either. Any time the athletes advocate for themselves or get a bigger piece of the pie, 3/4 of the board shows up butthurt to knight for those poor billionaire owners (who often receive plenty of "non-capitalist" help from taxpayers in the first place.)

I do believe LSU should start making its student athletes sign an air tight contract.. if they leave we go scorched earth and sue them for everything they have

Maybe at Bama, but I have never heard of a scholarship not renewed at LSU. At least it is not called such. If someone leaves on his own behalf is breaching an agreement.

They need to know that in the real world there are consequences for breaking a commitment

If you transfer before your junior season you should sit a year. If you transfer junior or senior year you can play immediatelly.

I would have no problem with the portal if all players going in now have to sit out the first 7 games of the next season and they burn their eligibility for that year if a coach thinks he can get cute and red shirt them.

I think maybe requiring certain time commitment before your free transfer is a good idea and maybe letting a player leave is a head coach I leaves or is fired.

You get a free transfer after 3 years and when you graduate. You can transfer if the head coach is gone

Seems fair and reasonable.

Yes, but a lot of time it's their position coach they have the strongest bond with.

I still think the answer is to build a program that students don't want to transfer out of. That's way better than trying to come up with all kinds of restrictions.

liberal transfer portals

What is liberal about the transfer portal, actually has conservative/libertarian roots as the “right to work”
