This stat to me may be the only fair way to judge this defense. Our offense scores so often and so quickly that our defense is being asked to stop the other side over and over. I don’t know of another fair way to assess them.

Using this stat, I’m guessing Big 12 defenses probably aren’t as bad as we always think they are. And maybe SEC defenses aren’t as good. I don’t know. Maybe someone that knows how can find some up to date numbers on it.

I know our defense isn’t always passing the look test. But they’ve made some great stops and have been on the field constantly. I’m trying to find a new way to think about how they’re playing in my head so I can cope lol.

For years this board has shite on big 12 and Pac 12 defenses but now that we have a great offense we are looking for ways to defend our defense. Bama and Clemson have great offense and defense and those are the teams we are trying to compete with.

Of course having a low scoring offense that controls TOP aides a defense. And at LSU with great special teams and an offense that didn’t turn the ball over helped the defense even more. But the majority of this board always said our offense was hurting our defense...and now they are saying the same thing.

I would also look at the number of plays they are on the field and a scoring graph versus game time like you see in basketball. Even though we bitch about the defense as a whole they only gave up 10 pts in the first half and 7 of those were first drive.

Contrast that to 14 in the 3rd and 0 in the 4th.

Sometimes it seems a tale of two halves. Guess what, the D is having some very rough 2nd halves.

We have to consider some of it is fatigue.

Now we've had some rough games, that include 1st halves too... so there's other issues out there also. Case in point being Vandy's first "drive" and that run defense.

Overall though, the logic says run a bend don't break defense. The reality and numbers say attack.

And I say there's plenty of logic in an attack defense with this offense. We can handle risk on the offensive side.

Aranda wanted to be able to get pressure with 4, while varying that 4 constantly... so it's not just DL. But, it isn't happening; we're not there. Recruit better, try again next year. For now, set the hounds loose and go for it.

All of this is legit - I’m trying to find a way to get an overall assessment of how they’re playing, and thus reduce my counseling expenses.

We’re used to judging an LSU defense by gaudy low passing and rushing yard numbers, or by points allowed. We’re in new territory here.

You would think that with this offense giving Aranda a cushion to work with, once we got a comfortable lead, we’d attack. This offense gives us room for error so why not attack and try to force turnovers? We were up 28-7 or 28-10 early against Vandy and in that instance, you’d think Aranda could start blitzing and etc.
It looked like shelvin was getting a great push up the middle yesterday. You can’t help but wonder what we would’ve done if Lawrence, Logan and Chaisson would’ve done out there with Shelvin getting such a great push and commanding double teams.

You mean the great Bama defense that gave up 23 points and 500 yards to South Carolina?

We have no idea if Clemson’s defense is good or not. They haven’t played an offense capable of scoring on anyone. A&M is hot garbage.

This is my point. Based on what metric? They have the same problem we do.
