When a team gives you an out you take it

Obviously in the late innings with a bad bunt, and a guy on 2nd with no outs, Mainieri would hope they go for the lead runner. But early in the game or the situation last night, he wants them to go to first. In college ball, its not a bad philosophy to get the out given to you.

I do think he's kind of hypocritical about it though. He wants the out they give to him because outs are so hard to get, but then he turns around and bunts early in games all the time.

So what's the consensus here?

Take the sure out?

I don't disagree with you. I was just agreeing with Josh that this is Coach's philosophy and instruction.

I definitely think there are situations where you should go to 2nd.

Like someone mentioned earlier: no outs, tie game, late innings - get the lead runner.

You go to first no questions asked. It is learned in baseball from the little leagues

The reasons are numerous. Sure out, leaves options for next batter with pitching etc.

If the runners are moving on contact its a tough out to get the guy towards second

Its much worse to not get an out in that situation.

Or until we go to second and don't get the guy out, and then people will wonder why we didn't get the out at first.

Well, Arkansas must have a better defense than LSU because they just got the lead runner on a sac bunt in the 4th.

Mainieri's philosophy has been to get the runner at 1st base since he's been here. Guess you haven't paid attention. He's even said it.

This is correct.

I personally don't agree with it, but it is his philosophy.

Trying to get a cheap out more often leads to cheap runs than taking a sure out and that leading to runs. Pitching and defense is stellar so play with that in mind.

I agree with this. Problem is, to prohibitively say "always go to first" makes no sense. There are situations when an opportunity to get the lead runner must be taken. If you know it's prohibitive as the opposing coach, you tell your players this and it takes the pressure of getting a good bunt down off, thus making it much easier on them to get any bunt down.

Piggy coach trusted the judgement of his catcher and was rewarded. Thats what I'm talking about.

You obviously didn't read the thread. No one's talking about who fields the ball. Take a few minutes to read and you won't make a fool of yourself in the future. What a tool!!
