Players making lots of money is fine. But we’re in a system that's half pro half amateur where there is no expectation or commitment from the player. And that’s just not sustainable.

How did it get this out of hand.

I’m trying to think of what team other than LSU goes out publicly stating how much money they have to spend. Other teams will say they are going to get players from the portal but who else puts out a dollar figure?

Fiat currency allows, nay ensures, this happening. Would you behave differently were you in their stead?

It’s financially irresponsible for them not to enter the transfer portal every year. Blame the system not the players

Yeah! I have given up on basketball.

Football is on the bubble.

I don't believe it will survive under the present framework.

After over 60 yrs of watching sports, they are killing it.

All things change. For better or worse.

The game we once knew where players held high regard for their respective schools and played for pride and love of team is somewhat gone.

Money dictates everything…….but kinda always has. I was told in the eighties when I reported to Fall camp “this is a business and you’re being compensated with the experience, room and board and an education.”

Money has definitely darkened it now though.

Correct. I can remember when NASCAR was big.

I suppose football will last until fans can no longer afford tickets.

Wonder what the interest will be if Kiffiin doesn't have LSU in the playoffs in a couple of years.

Jacob Hester has openly said he didn't like LSU until LSU came to in with a better playing time offering than Texas.

That's a lie.

He's on record saying " I had some big offers, I was committed to Texas, but I didn't have LSU, I wanted LSU"

Nick Saban saw Jacob at practice one day, offered and Hester flipped with the quickness.

Expecting NO, hoping for something different. With all the smart people and all the lawyers we should have been able to add the guardrails. (Limitations, fines, taxes, severe fees for exceeding certain NiL payouts.)

Unpopular take:

Players are now 1-year contract employees. LSU is currently assessing individual NIL/rev share on all players; players are currently assessing their value on open market. This happens in every industry for anyone not tied to a long term enforceable contract.

Both sides are just acting in their own self interest and working within the stupid rules of the system.

Renegotiating a contract is not extortion. There are no threats, no force being applied, and no intimidation to compel schools or players to act against their will. You can hate the system, but it’s not extortion in any way.

College football is not like it used to be. Years ago, when talking about LSU players, you knew that 90% were from Louisiana. Today, we're lucky if 10% are from here. It's now in the era 0f "Rent a Player" for the most money! And that sucks!

Our roster…today:
55 from Louisiana
14 from Texas
10 from Georgia
7 from Florida
22 from another 6 or so states combined

Over half our our roster is from Louisiana, but continue whatever narrative you choose to believe.

Current LSU roster

I agree to a large degree with this thinking... However, being a business man for 40 years I can tell you these issues will be sorted out in relatively quick order through the language in the contracts.

Unpopular take: Players are now 1-year contract employees.

Where do I start?

1. Actually, it was the National Labor Relations Board that filed a complaint against the NCAA stating athletes should be considered employees. What’s wrong with that you ask. Well, for starters, if that happens, then the Athletic Department will find itself negotiating with each individual team in their department for the Revenue Sharing money. Every year. And don’t get me started on benefits and a 401K…..

2. By the way, most posters here should stop typing NCAA and type “The Schools”. The NCAA is not a government agency. It is a private entity made up by the schools themselves to govern the activities related to college athletics. Anything they say and do is, technically, at the behest of the schools themselves. It is NOT an institution that “makes millions” every year.

3. Fact: in 2022 alone, about $1BILLION was given to student athletes in the name of NIL. Anyone thinking the Feds haven’t taken notice is fooling themselves. Part of the slowness seen is due to the multiple Federal agencies involved. IRS, FTC, NLRB etc etc. ALL were involved when members of Congress convened to try and help sort out the problems. Notice how that didn’t stop the NLRB from filing their complaint against the NCAA, er “The Schools”.

Sorry BornAndRaised, I realize only #1 applies to your post. I have so much more but as Drizz pointed out last night, it’s a long long discussion. If I understand correctly, the biggest issue was not the revenue sharing, it’s the NIL the Feds were frowning on. It’s primarily why the clearinghouse was created.

Don't you love capitalism? Do you call when you walk in and ask for a raise "extortion"? Why the frick do grown arse men who have worked for decades and understand how capitalism and business work, get pissed because the younger generation understands how America runs and uses the same playbook?

If the system allows kids to be free agents every year they’re 110% going to be free agents every year. If this system was in place 20 years ago it would’ve occurred then as well.

I HATE the system but until it’s changed they would be dumb not to given they’re playing a sport where your worth can be greatly diminished in the blink of an eye.
