For some reason some people get all worked up at the suggestion that a player could go both ways or could have excelled at another position. A few players at LSU come to mind for me. Very, very few players can go both ways. But there are a lot who could play on one side or the other and have excelled at both.

The first who coems to mind for me is Devin White who, but for Leonard Fournette and Guice being ahead of him, would likely have played running back at LSU. Interestingly enough, my son and I did the radio for a high school game White played in when he was listed as a running back as a recruit. He was so fast and so big,it was comical watching these little high school corners try to tackle him once he got loose. He could be a pro running back. That said, he was even better that game at linebacker. He literally blew up every play. I thought LSU might give him some snaps his senior year in short yardage situations at running back.

Speaking of Fournette, he might well have been a first round pick as linebacker too, and maybe have a longer NFL career. Imagine him coming off the edge with his size and speed. He was a great high school linebacker.

People laugh at the thought Miles wanted Jamar Chase as a defensive back. You cant do much better than winning the Belitnikoff award, he is where he needs to be, no doubt. But that's not to say with his size and speed and athleticism he might not have been an all american safety too.

Its very rare you get a player that can play both ways and that is so much better than the others it makes sense he play botyh ways. Butkus and Jim Thorpe played both ways in the pros. The only ones I can think of in recent memory in college to pull it off are Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson.

There really hasn't been anyone in college football like Bailey and Woodson until Daryl Stingley Jr came along. His ball skills are off the chart even with his back to the ball.

Stingley is that rare generational player who can make game changing plays on either side of the ball. Bailey did it at Georgia. When Georgia upset LSU in 1998 Bailey was in on 96 plays! 96. He played 34 on offense, 47 on defense and 15 on special teams. He had seven catches for 114 yards when not shutting down LSU's offense. Georgia would likely not have upset LSU that year but for Bailey being on the field almost the whole game.

I understand Orgeron had promised Stingley he could try to go both ways. I'm all for it so long as he has the stamina to do it without unreasonable risk of injury.

As highly as some LSU fans think of Stingley, I am not sure some quite get what a generational player he can be. I do think he is that very rare player that can change the game on both sides of the ball.

If that promise is what it took for Orgeron to get Stingley, it was worth it. I can see him on reverses, in the slot, on wide receiver screens. Every time he touches the ball good things can happen.

They are probably not going to throw at him much next year anyway, give him a few offensive plays just to put the ball in his hands.
