The fact that you have recent former players who excelled under him (Nabers) celebrating his departure and (to my knowledge) no current/recent players at least giving him a courtesy "thanks" says a lot.
The national media has never liked him. And it appears clear neither do his players. But that was the case when he left ND for LSU. There wasn't much sadness from ND and his former players there.
This also speak to just how little research Woodward did on this hire. He basically went to Kelly's wikipedia page, looked at the resume, and offered him a dump truck full of cash simply to say he got a "splash" hire without any consideration of how he would be received.
