He is ranked as the #72 college baseball draft eligible prospect according to Baseball America.

I just find it hard to believe with his lack of power and arm that he would be that high. But if he goes in the top 10 rounds, then he probably has to.

Andrew Stevenson had no power and a below average arm and went in the 2nd round. I think Stevenson is clearly faster and a little better in the field, but I think they're comparable in some way.

Mark Laird had a complete noodle of an arm and no power either and went in the 9th round. I think Duplantis is a better all around player than Laird as well.

Duplantis is a very polished baseball player. I think a lot of teams are going to love him like we do. But like I said, I really hope I'm wrong or that he pulls a Blake Dean and comes back.

Here are the various rankings of current players I've been able to find:

Name | MLB.com | PG | 2080 | FG | BA | PBR | Average
Zach Watson | 62 | 87 | 59 | - | 68 | - | 69.0

ETA: Formatting the whole thing was going to take more time than I have, so there are Watson's ratings.

Why do people have this notion that Duplantis doesn’t have a good arm? It’s not great but it is good. I know as a freshman it was probably slightly below average but it has gotten a lot better since then.

I never said he had a bad arm

I don’t think I was talking to you specifically but I have seen on here where people think he doesn’t have a good arm.

Even if we lose Watson and Dups, we still have Cabrera, Jordan, and Webre to play OF. Plus, the OF recruits coming in.

We better have a great centerfielder coming in, because Cabrera, Jordan, and Webre will see a lot of balls drop that were caught this year.

There's a kid out of Florida named DiGiacomo who's coming in, and he's supposedly got Watson/Duplantis type wheels. Question is whether he can hit, and you never quite know about a freshman. But he'd be your center fielder.

Or maybe you get really lucky and Elijah Cabell makes it to school, in which case your centerfielder is a superstar.

But if Duplantis or Watson stick around, you're fine in the outfield. Cabrera and Webre can handle the corner outfield positions.

BTW, somebody earlier in this thread asked about first base. We should have that covered with either Saul Garza from Howard JC or Cade Beloso from John Curtis, both of whom are ridiculously heavy hitters. Beloso had like 12 homers in 80 at bats this year as a senior at Curtis and you can see some atomic blasts he hit if you search him on YouTube and Garza hit .378 with 23 homers and 66 RBI as a freshman at Howard this year.

I don’t see him drafted in the first five rounds. He’s been atrocious on the base path this season and hasn’t performed as a top five round pick at the plate. He definitely has the intangibles, but I feel as if he’s slipped a good bit this season.

He needs to come back and win a title next season.

The MLB, more than any other league, drafts for potential. This is a little different argument than saying a basketball or football player should stay in school to polish their game before going pro. All the flaws in baseball can be worked on and corrected in the minors.
