I'm ashamed of you, Tuscaloosa. You had to come in here and talk some of these tards off of the cliff. Should've just let them jump IMO.

ETA: What did LSU average TOP last year?

Wouldn't say drastically, but it would help. Thats just IMO.

I'm just posting stats. People can digest them however they wish.

9th

Averaged about 50th over Chavis' tenure though.

ETA:

2009 - 107th
2010 - 57th
2011 - 26th
2012 - 46th
2013 - 57th
2014 - 9th

So averaged 50.3

Keep in mind, Bama fans are also ecstatic that Les Miles is our coach. They tell me that all the time here in Atlanta. That should give you some perspective.

This might help explain their poor red zone and 3rd down numbers if they were getting worn down.

2009 and 2010 were still decent defenses with that TOP.

I couldn't put a number on it, but I'm pretty sure a DC would benefit much more with a 9th ranked TOP offense (LSU 2014) than a 82nd ranked TOP offense (Clemson 2010). That seems like a big difference so I would assume it would show up considerably in the points against column. Lets just say Chavis has benefited infinitely more than Steele.

Perhaps Steele will have more success at LSU than Clemson, considering LSU doesn't have to fight another big in-state school for Louisiana recruits. Clemson, meanwhile, competes with USEe and nearby schools like UGA and GT for the South Carolina kids.

The problem with this assumption is that if your team is not putting up TD's, TOP loses importance. LSU 19.1 PPG in SEC left little margin for error by the D. There has to be some balance in scoring and TOP as most offenses LSU goes against these days are more dynamic and better ones are putting up 28 per game and greater, better offensive SEC teams were putting up 35+.

Judging any DC by one game is silly.

Same years as Steele's numbers:

#38
#16
#19 (2011 beast defense year)

Yeah. It's amazing how some folks don't get that Clemson D. talent < LSU D. Talent. At least in most years. His prior two years he even had Clemson in the top 30 defensively. Same with his only year as DC at 'Bama when their talent level on D wasn't nearly what it would become. Steele also recruited many of the stalwarts of the '09 and '11 BCS champs.

I'm not gonna sit here and say Steele was the best hire but I don't think it's as bad as some of the posters on the rant make it out to be.

For Saban to hire him twice tells me that he is a solid coach because Saban can hire anyone he wants.

You don't have to sugarcoat anything with me because we all know Saban is the def coord and calls the shots on that side of the ball, always has and always will even when he was at LSU.

I think Steele will be effective in LSU's system because Miles still values the rushing attack which can make any defense look better than the numbers indicate.

271 yards passing and multiple big plays by a backup QB who was very bad/limited isn't a great bulletin board game
