re: Our offense is obviously lacking. What’s the issue? Are we saving the playbook?

The thing is Nuss isn’t servicable at best
he’s pretty good at best.
He just isn’t playing his best. and often doesn’t

IMO the OL isn't terrible. It's the scheme.
Sloan is trying to use the WR screens/hitches to open up the defense which is stupid. He's running a zone run scheme that never forces the back edge or LB to respect a QB run or RPO throw, so the backside pursuit is too much.
If Nuss is who they say he is, he needs to attack downfield earlier to back off the LBs and CBs with intermediate or deep throws. The LBs and CBs are currently playing aggressive and LSU isn't changing or taking advantage of it.
Sloan also needs more mis-direction, designed QB runs or Jet sweeps to get the LBs to slow down a step. There were several zone runs last night that if Nuss pulls it and runs he gains 10 yards or if he throws a backside slant they get a big chunk of yardage, but the defense isn't respecting it, so why run a zone when the back edge defender and/or LB isn't forced to stay home?

Yep I agree but Nuss does better in the passing game. I’m glad we’re running the ball more, but why are we making our offense one-dimensional instead of using something like the RPO in a spread where you have the RB running some plays, then passing it the next. Changing it up constantly to confuse the defense.
Nuss isn’t a runner but he can make short runs to get the 1st down. He’s done it just not consistently. We have good RB & good WR, so we don’t need him to run it for a rushing TD.

It's the entire offensive design that is the problem and pounding a square peg into a round hole.
The playcalling is terrible, yes, but it is the utter lack of understanding your players strengths and weaknesses.

Well, exactly.
LSU offense is real easy to defend right now because Nuss is NOT a running threat.
Stop forcing a round peg in a square hole.
Nuss is a pro-style QB that will torch defenses with play action. The running game will be MUCH better with a pro-style offense too.

Where's Ensminger nowadays?
Posted on 9/14/25 at 9:50 am to GumboPot
You don’t need a dual threat QB to run a successful up tempo spread offense.

A bad o line makes pretty much everything harder

I know lol I just said it cuz sunshine pumping Tiger fans used this so many times in the past that I had to reminisce and throw it out there. Lol

Yep I agree and this seems to be the most truthful statement on this post.
I must admit though I’m still confused why LSU & their QB was getting so much preseason hype. That’s rarely ever happened. It’s almost as if it makes you think there’s an ulterior motive by the media because it just didn’t make much sense.
The Arch Manning hype we obviously get that hype and why he was the favorite, but the Nuss hype? Other than his Dad being an NFL coach, I don’t get it. Lol

Lol I did it as a joke cuz that’s all I heard from LSU fans in the Miles era. Hahahaha

There’s no need for a conspiracy theory. This is a very weak year for QBs. Nuss had a lot of production last year and it seemed like a good bet that he could exceed that with another year as a starter + an LSU team that was supposed to be much better than last year. It is pretty surprising to me that we’re this bad on offense with a defense this good.

Yep and in my opinion explains Nuss’ regression….all falls on coaching. The general census of LSU football. Loads of talent to win NC even without a perfect, great QB and yet we can’t find or don’t hire the right coaches all at the same time. Saban won without great assistants though. That should tell you who to blame ultimately and who it falls on ultimately either way and that’s BK!!

Yep, Sloan is running WR screens way too early and often! It's like every damn first down. That's high school shite. Let your big dog QB throw the damn ball downfield! Use Play action or jet motion to hold the LBs or show coverage. It's so damn simple it's infuriating. I'm a retired, second-rate, youth, recreational football coach and it's obvious to me!!!
I believe in Nuss, but this scheme is HORRIBLE for him. He's not Jayden Daniels or Tim Tebow! He's more like a Joe Burrow QB who can set up in the pocket and pick you apart or even run once in a while when necessary, but this scheme is designed for a mobile QB who likes to pull it and run or throw slants/curls.
I would even be ecstatic if he would pull it and throw the slants, but for some reason LSU isn't using the slants/curls or intermediate routes to attack LBs in coverage off the fake zone run early in the game and rarely use them throughout the game!
Its WR screen on 1st down, inside or off tackle run on 2nd down with no misdirection or QB running threat leading to 3rd and medium+.
If they don't change, Sloan needs to go or get demoted and not call plays.

We should be doing the complete opposite on these calls. It’s almost as if Sloan thinks choosing the opposite of what a team normally might do on 1st down etc. he tries to trick it up or something to confuse the defense. Problem is the very vanilla “trick play calling” ain’t working Sloan. The offense isn’t executing. Try something else FFS.

Exactly and also there’s lots of successful spread offenses have great pocket passer QB who don’t run.
Posted on 9/14/25 at 10:10 am to sarussell01
This offense doesn’t fit Nuss skill set and I think it’s the genesis of all offensive problems. We can argue if it’s Sloan or Nuss all day but ultimately it’s on CBK to make sure that all the pieces fit.
For anyone who sees it differently I would ask you to remember the Harold Perkins wasted seasons because we didn’t know where he fit in the defense.
We also want him to be Joe Burrow but he’s more McElroy.

Too much shite for our personnel or the coach to run. Im not sure which.
If we can't handle all the bullshite then keep it simple.
Under center. Find a fullback. Play action pocket QB. Hit seams.
With our defense it doesn't have to be some run pass option constant motion swing out sideline throw bullshite.

Spread it with 4 Wide split. We are unstoppable when we do. Let it open up the run game.

We have sub par guards who can't move d linemen. Second, Nuss has tanked. He plays scared. I think he way too worried about int's now. I don't think he returns to last season's form. I think he is what he is this year.
