All I can say is that you fellas better thank your lucky stars that Joe Rob didn't COMPLETELY BOTCH the Wing recruitment up.
He really almost d!cked the poor kid around. Flew halfway around the world to get a Visa after he found out he needed a different type of one to get into LSU that he used to get into PBS.
Flew non-stop, got the paperwork, and then flew back, same way. Kid wanted LSU. This was after we "weren't much help" with getting his transcripts in order. His parents found someone with some experience.
Meanwhile, JoeRobbingUsOfMoolah was busy taking a commitment from Dylan Effing Botts to fill his spot.
Wing & Fam got the feeling LSU had left 'em out to dry. Everything worked out, but it proved to be another brick in a Special Teams Coaching Award Winner's Wall.
That's the last recruiting situation Miles allowed JoeRob to eff up.
I wondered about that at the time. Now I wonder if that was a factor in Robinson leaving.

From what I've heard, all these people fellating his ability as a ST Coach and are angst-ridden about how we'll do are worrying over nothing.
Miles is very confident about his personal coaching and contributions to the ST Unit the past few years. He feels that ST will be just fine as long as their specialists can perform.
I had always been of the opinion that JoeRob had ingrained himself into the Miles Inner Circle, but I was very wrong.
2009 Ole Miss had his fingerprints on it. You saw Les' reaction to the penalty called on Tharold Simon in the Cotton Bowl? Watch who pushes him out there-against his will-before the flag's called.
It was one of "mild displeasure" to be diplomatic.

So does anyone think the football player with the Aussie accent has a tough time with the ladies on campus?

Miles said he can pooch punt it to the five yard line like he was using a nine iron
I _still_ cannot understand the pooch punt thing. Kick the danged thing OUT OF BOUNDS. No chance of a runback. If it goes out anywhere between the 20 and the goal line, you're good. No hoping the ball will sit down, no counting on the right bounce...

I'm pretty sure he went after Botts because Wing was ineligible at the time.
However, if you want to keep on bashing a respected former coach for no particular reason, by all means go ahead.

It's not bashing, a lot of us was wondering what was going on with Wing at the time, and why we gave a scholarship to Botts. I thought it very odd and I recall saying so.
Glad Wing stuck with us.

You, sir, don't understand field position as it relates to the momentum of the game. Having an opponent pinned onside the 5 is much more favorable than lettIng them start at the 20. It forces a team to completely get away from their normal play book. Plus if you stop them for a 3 & out you get the ball back at midfield. It's all strategery.

If you look when Botts committed it was about a week before the last day freshmen had to be on campus. Miles was told there was no way Wing was going to make it to campus because of Visa issues. They then immediately offered Botts, and he committed. A few days later Wing got his Visa.
Wing goes on to break LSU punting records, End of story!

LSUdm21: Hmm. Methinks I do, in fact, understand field position and momentum.
Now, I've never been a football punter, but I did play it from age 9 through HS. And having played rugby for quite a few years (and quite a few games at fullback, which is a position in which you have to kick often), I have, in fact, punted quite a few times.
A) It is difficult to kick a high punt and have it drop inside the 10 (or 5 yard line). Quite often, the ball will go into the endzone for a touchback. Even with excellent cover people, bounces often don't go your way.
B) Anything inside the 20 is an improvement over a touchback, and if the ball is kicked out-of-bounds you don't have to worry about bounces, downfield cover or someone like Patrick Peterson running it back on you.

I've been excited about the Wing commitment from the beginning. The Oz secret weapon.

Yeah. We're fine. Wing could end up being really special, based on everything I've been told and read about him.

Thanks for this insight Uncle Rico.

Which is why it's such a big deal that Wing has the ability to do it so often probably due to his Aussie heritage of rugby. He can be a real weapon for our defense.

So you've punted in rugby before right? Then you should know that it's much harder to angle punt a ball than it is to pooch it.
