Swimming is definitely getting better. LSU got rid of the head coach that was bringing the program down just 2 years ago. The assistant coach now turned head coach, Dave Geyer is starting to turn things around. It takes a lot of time in a non revenue sport where 5 teams have dominated the landscape for the past 15 years or so. It is especially hard to turn a mediocre program in the SEC into a winning program because of the dominant teams in the conference. Just give it time, I believe in that program.

Well, there is no "BCS" in gymanstics, but there are 82 Division 1 programs. And LSU is in the final 12.

Now, perhaps our definitions of "mediocre" differ, but methinks you are just looking for something to bitch about.

so, you are "ok" with not winning the SEC since 1981, finishing in the bottom half of the SEC 10 of last 12 years? losing to the three top sec teams 80% of the time in 30 years...that's ok with you? it's all about being ahead of 25 non bcs teams and beating UK and Auburn all the time?
and you like when coach says it's "my program"

How the frick should I know? I don't follow contemporary Quidditch trends.

I did hear there's a girl at St. Joe's that know how to work a wicked broom though. I should probably take that to the recruiting board.

You do know it is ok to win a National Championship without winning your conference or division, right(Bama proved that crap)? Gymanistics does not have to win the conference to win the title and they are in the rotation of the top 12 in the nation.

Men's tennis is ranked 19 in the country with a chance at hosting a NCAA regional. Some people dont know what they are talking about.

Absolutely true. The problem here is that LSU is a top ten team but probably only the fifth best in the SEC. Its been that way for a long time. We're not gaining any ground.

I think Yvette retiring caught everyone off guard and then Patrick Murphy screwed us big time. I'm pulling for Beth Torina but something is definitely missing here.

It's a recruiting and talent issue. She is a really good coach, but can't make the past recruits hit when they never could. They look better than last year to be honest. The thing they need to do is recruit better and it will all come together. Give her time.

Half a season in her first year and people are calling for her head in a sport that nobody cares about? Our fanbase really sucks sometimes.

Off the top of your head, can you tell us how many national championships in womens' gymnastics have been won by teams other than Georgia and Alabama? They have combined to win half of all the Womens' Gymnastics National Championships EVER, and 15 of the last 25. And Utah and UCLA are the only two other schools to have ever won one at all. We have the misfortune of being in the same conference with the two programs who are head and shoulders and chest and waist and hips and thighs and knees and calves above all but 3 or 4 programs in the country. So, yes, I'm "ok" with not winning the SEC since 1981, since all that means is that we finished behind one or two schools that about 77 of the 80 schools in the country who aren't them also finished behind.

Alabama and Georgia are incredibly poor standards against which to compare the success of our gymnastics program. And even still we have managed to finish ahead of one of them in the SEC standings more often than anyone besides those two and Florida (another very powerful program) has finished ahead of us.

And lastly, conference standings/championships are not the standard for measuring gymnastics programs. If you look, you'll see that Florida has won the SEC in Womens Gymnastics 8 times since 1981. And in that time, they have won zero National Championships while Georgia and Alabama have won 15, including 3 years when Florida actually won the SEC. The Nationals is where it's at in gymnastics, and LSU is pretty solid there.

As for the "my program" comment, yeah, I'm okay with that. She's built this program to a highly successful level, and she's the head coach. What do you expect her to say? Miles, Bertman, Dale Brown, Dennis Shaver, John Brady, Trent Johnson, Smoke, Sue Gunter, Pokey . . . they've all referred to their programs as "my program" at one time or another. It's okay for them, and it's okay for D-D.

People need to realize she came aboard late last year and in softball the recruiting class for last year and this year is pretty much already determined. I don't know if she is a good softball coach or not and that will be determined but the talent level on this team is not that good. Yvette was really good in her prime but the last few years she did not do a good job.

In softball Louisiana has good talent but a lot of it is undeveloped. I will give the UL staff credit because he recruits for the most part only Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas and finds some good talent that no one is recruiting and develops them. That is what Torina needs to do.

Softball:

These are Yvette's players and they are having the same problem most of her tems had: hitting.

The softball team has been anemic in terms of run production over the last 4-5 years when they play the big dogs in the conference. ULL is thriving with home grown girls from the state. LSU is struggling to stay in the top 25 with girls from all over the country. She needs to revamp recruiting. Yvette seemed to have the Trent Johnson approach to recruiting and Torina is dealing with the aftermath

GYM; have no insight on that
