Orgeron at LSU for the next 15 years? Yes, one college football columnist says

I usually avoid these types of stories, but I felt a little angst this AM and thought I'd kick the hornet's nest. Have fun!

When responding to a reader question about college football coaches he expected to still at the same school in 10 to 15 years, Sports Illustrated writer Andy Staples' answer included LSU football coach Ed Orgeron in his answer.
"I think Ed Orgeron will last a long time at LSU," Staples wrote. "The hot seat talk last offseason came only from the uniformed, and Orgeron continues to upgrade LSU's roster. it's his dream job, so he isn't going anywhere as long as he wins enough to keep the fans happy. That's quite the trick, but (Nick) Saban isn't going to coach forever. If Coach O can hang on until the GOAT hangs it up, he might be able to retire in Baton Rouge."
quote:
Orgeron's Tigers showed improvement in his second full season at the helm. LSU earned a New Year's Six bowl matchup, ultimately defeating the previously-unbeaten UCF. LSU's finish of No.6 in AP's final ranking was the Tigers' highest finish since losing the national championship game to Alabama in the 2011 season.

His tenure is completely riding on his ability to replace Dave Aranda when he inevitably takes a head gig somewhere.

I hope he’s right, that would mean he’s winning. That’s all I care about.

You’re a day late Hoss. Derek already posted this, complete with his usual lineup of creepy pictures.

This is the year for O, CFP or bust.

Orgeron's biggest hurdle is 2019. If he can't win 10 regular season games with the returning talent, coupled with the true freshmen that will make impacts.. we have a problem.
I'm a big critic of Orgeron but I can admit that if he wins 11 games this year, he's not going anywhere for a good while barring a monumental collapse in 2020.

My bad. I looked on the front page and didn't see it. I figured if it was it would be 10 pages by now. I should have known Ree was going to jump on this one.

How many years would you be ok with O coaching without an SECw championship?
Not a natty, not a playoff birth, not a conference championship, just win the division.
We all want LSU do win and win big. I hope Orgeron is here for the next 20 years, but for me hat means he has to win something of worth. If he can’t beat Bama in 5 years then what the frick are we doing?
I don’t get why we need to wait for Saban to retire while the rest of the country continues to build to beat him. That’s not the mindsight of a champion.
It can be done. Auburn beat them year before last, Georgia has had the, on the ropes twice, Clemson raped em.
Hell at this point I’m just hoping we score against them, that’s a far cry from calling for Les’s job after he lost to Saban in his prime.

“11 games”
I always thought the measuring stick for LSU football coaches since 2000 has been winning championships such as the west or the SEC and competing for national championships.

Yeah, it is.
He can't coordinate. If he replaces Dave Aranda's defense with a crappy defense, he'll be fired within 2 years.
His model is hire great coordinators and let them coach. If he hires unsuccessful coordinators, his model doesn't work.

If successful enough I think O has his dream job and no worries about him bolting for another school at this point in his career.

Georgia finished #5 in the final College Football Playoff poll in 2018. With 2 losses.. IF LSU hadn't lost to A&M, LSU would have finished #5 in the final poll with 2 losses. That's competing for a national championship

no. Finishing #5 in the final playoff you could count as competing for a NC but not the final AP poll and of course if your aunt had nuts she’d be your uncle

What do you think that the coaches are doing right now?
They're building a team to beat bama and anybody else for that matter. They just signed an excellent class for 2018 and the 2019 class is going to be epic. The coaches are building a championship team.
