Call me an optimist but I think last year was a long hard season on the players. They played at a high level in almost every game but still lost the one that counted. So I think this year they have taken the approach that they would exert maximum effort in games they need to. Washington came in and some experts claimed they could test LSU...we took care of business. The auburn game they weren't picking who would win but how many times auburn would drive inside our 30. I do think the players listen to outsiders and hear how the team they are playing sucks etc.

I hope I am right and they flip the switch now that we start facing good teams.

But that's my point. Can a team go 'flat' and then get back on their game when they need to, or should the coaches strive to keep them tuned at the highest level at all times? I'd argue that the coaches should work to ensure that at all times, one every play, that the players are switched on - and giving 100%. Maybe it's just engrained in me, but complacency kills.....

It is certainly best to keep a sharp ax at all times but hey it's winter , too much cold, I don't want to step out unnecessarily- I will sharpen it when I have to cut the wood and not at all times - not ideal but expected.

We have seen LSU play sloppy against UNT but decimate UDub (that was as close to a shutout without being one :)).

Miles led teams in the past, have shown that they can be lethargic in certain earlier games but yet show a lot of intensity in later games.

I am an optimist and also don't worry too much about details that I can't control -I certainly hope for the best but wouldn't fuss too much over a sloppy win.

I think this is what all coaches strive for to an extent, but I think it is impossible to achieve in sport. Ive never been in the military, but it seems to me that your life and your buddies lives are on the line. In sports, there is more selfishness involved on any team. No one is going to die if you take a play off or do not concentrate fully on your assignment.

Great teams are those not necessarily those with the best athletes but those that play for each other and pride of the team. LSU did not do that last night. But, yes they can, and most likely will turn it on next week in a game that they all know they can definitely lose if they are not ready. THere is more on the line. It is not about making a good showing, it is about getting not only getting a W,but also about not getting an L. They werent getting an L last night regardless.

Every snap is a chance to sharpen it for the time when you need it.... I think we've missed a couple of opportunities this year to work on some things that would help us down the road if we took each game seriously.

What we saw Saturday was a result of a couple things. First thing, the team took Towson very lightly. They knew Towson didn't have the horses to hang with them. This leads to a serious lack of focus and preperation during the week. I guarantee you that they had a terrible week of practice last week, and it showed on the field.

Combine the lack of preperation, no emotion, a half empty stadium, and add in a scrappy team of players on the other sideline playing their hearts out to prove they belong, and that's the result you get.

You've gotta have both to play well. Preperation + emotion = Playing well

I agree. My question is, does that lack of preparation and emotion hurt them down the road? Can they switch it back on after turning it past the 'off' position this week?
One guy gave some perspective from Jimmy Johnson earlier that was a little comforting, but as a whole I've got to say I'm a little worried that the team's lack of focus in these easier games may have cost them an opportunity to keep their edge, much less work on some of the things they need to improve upon.....

Yes, they can.

Will they, is a totally different question. Cause they'd better or else we'll lose a few games this year.

You need a new TV. I recommend Samsung.

Bama fans>LSU fans. Fact!

Bama, Michigan, Nebraska, and ND all fill the stadium regardless of weather and opponent.
Are you denying that Samsung makes a fine, high quality product??

Seriously though, Bama's stadium was not full last night against Ole Miss in the SEC opener. TIFWIW.

I'm curious what TD's athletes have to say about the Towson game - did our guys just quit before it started?

So in your training, have you ever been matched up with an inferior competitor in a physical contest?
Your adrenaline is not going. You are unduly relaxed. You're thinking "i don't really want to do this; I don't really want to hurt this guy." Then suddenly "bam", he pops you in the mouth, catches you in a hold, puts you in a situation where you had no business being.

That is what happened to LSU.

It could have been a multitude of things but as we have seen over the years from Les Miles coached teams they will play down to their competition. 1st it was raining and the crowd was less than energetic. Speaking from experience the last thing i wanted to do as a player was playing in rain,,,then to have a sparse crowd made it even worse. They kept hearing how this high school team would come to baton rouge and lay down. Well, the same high school team heard those same comments and was motivated by them. LSU did enough to win,,,however suffering a major injury. As we have seen from Les Miles coached team they generally come out well prepared to compete and win in a highly competitive game, with the exception of Alabama. I see LSU winning easily 31-23. Because honestly Driskell does not scare me.

Seriously, Towson was a physical team... So what if they were from a smaller school... The way they played the other night I'm giving them credit that they deserved... That team was playing their hearts out, I thought they had some quality legit players.

My belief in this game is that LSU had a great workout against them and prepared them better than everyone thinks for Florida, I mean did anyone noticed how big their frontline were on both side of the ball???

What worries me is these mistakes can be habit forming. And also hearing everyone say u suck can erode confidence.

Yeah sure - sleepwalking through multiple easy games is a sign of a team that gets upset with being called sucky.

If anything this team is too cocky / over confident and arrogant and should probably dampen it a bit

You do have times and games to where you just go thru the motions, waiting for a higher quality matchup.

It's called going through the motions. We played not to get hurt but we still lost our fullback. I expect harder and more focused play the rest of the way. This team under Miles will never pad stats and show up an inferior opponent. Winning is all that matters, it is just concerning that we struggle passing the ball and letting Towson run the ball like they did.

Every team has to play with a since of urgency. Whenever you lose that, you play down to your competition. With new players constantly coming in and out, we have also had issues with players learing to gel while on the field. One of our biggest assets is our depth, however, I feel like our depth has actually hurt us this year. Long term its alway a good idea to get your younger guys reps and ready to play SEC football. This year I feel like we have done so much rotating that the starters have not had enough time to get on the same page with each other because there is someone different beside them on every other play.

As much as it hurts to say, Im worried about Mett being able to shoulder the critism and responsibility that the fans and media have put on him. He seems lost and trying not make mistakes instead of trying to make plays. I hope the switch turns on for him soon, because we go as he goes and right now, he isnt going well.

Most good programs do, if not all of them,
LSU fan's apathy has continued to grow the last few years, it's really getting pretty pathetic

I think it is slightly different for a soldier than it is for a college football player to bring their A game for any and all missions regardless of the need.

Take any profession (be it sales/advertising/research scientist)and there is the underlying insecurity of the boss threatening you and even then it is tough to have the same intensity on all days.

It is even more tough in sports where the mental aspects/emotional let downs / pride play a very large factor in the execution.
Good post.
