I keep seeing this brought up in post from other fans, but as an LSU Fan I see the Depth Chart and the names are guys that we know. Guys that have had playing time.

I think they have just seen the stat of LSU's lost production and assume those spots are filled with Day 1 guys?

What is your numerical definition of inexperience?

Dare Rosenthal - 229 Snaps Played
Ed Ingram - 25 Games Played/ 15 Starts
Liam Shanahan - 3 Year Starter/ 30 games
Chasen Hines - 286 Snaps Played in 2018 / Played in 10 games 2019
Austin Deculus - 39 Games Played / 24 Starts

The oline's issue will be depth and it will be needed at some point. The first group will be just as good as last year's unit.

People are underestimating the amount of returning experience for LSU. Yes we lost "starters" but as you point out many players that will be starting this year have plenty of game experience.

been saying this for a while.

starting 5 have a ton of experience. backups are another story. talented, but no (or very little) experience.

Where do you find snaps played?

I like how you used "snaps played" in an effort to make the numbers ostensibly support your position. 229 snaps is like 3.5 games.

Shanahan, Ingram, and Deculus are all “starters” in terms of individual games played. They just haven’t played together (or at LSU in Shanahan’s case).

The first group will be substantially better than last year’s. Don’t let that award fool you; last year’s line was good but not great. It certainly was not among the top 5 in the country. This year we have a great line. Rosenthal and Hines are certain NFL starters. Deculus and Ingram are certain to make NFL rosters, and probably will be starters before their careers are over. I can’t say about the center, but they seem to like him.

Depth looks fairly good to me. We have a plug and play tackle in Cam Wire, two second year guards who were highly recruited, a plug and play backup center, and a freshman, Xavier Hill, who has apparently distinguished himself.

Rosenthal started what, 5 games last season?

Hines started multiple games in 2018 and played against LSU toughest opponents (Florida, Georgia, Bama, Auburn). I think the only reason he didn't play more last season is because he was LSU's only potential backup a Center and they didn't want to risk him getting hurt playing guard when Ingram was available to step in.

Shanahan is the one unknown because he's playing a new position at a much higher level of competition, but it's not like this is the first time ANY of the starting 5 are walking on the field to start a game.

They'll need to gel, but this isn't an "inexperienced" group

This isn’t true. Three of those “freshmen” are second year players.

But its not 3.5 games. Its snaps in multiple games.

Rosenthal's 229 snaps were through 6 games.

But again, I asked the question. What is your definition of inexperience?

This, the unbelievable escapeability of Burrow and CEH made it possible to overlook a lot of mistakes.

I'm not sure about the pass blocking, but on paper we should be able to run the shite out of the football. This starting five features some serious road graders.

This group has zero starts with the guy on the right and/or left of them. Much of OL play is knowing what the guy next to you is going to do in given situations and these guys have no game experience together. Certainly it helps that they have the experience that they do have, but it'll still take time for the unit to "gel".

No Doubt

Rosenthal - 6'7 327
Ingram - 6'3 315
Shanahan - 6'5 304
Hines - 6'3 347
Deculus- 6'6 331

I thought Shanahan was a good bit smaller. But these are the current LSUSports listings

Charles was solid, but Cushenberry was All-World

Center will be the biggest question mark, outside of first man up with an injury

I suspect that 2020 LSU will run the ball a fair amount more than 2019 LSU did.

It's going to be a different approach. In 2019 we passed to open up the run game. In 2020 we will run to open up the pass game.

I also think the run game will carry us for a while until Myles and the WRs further develop their chemistry.
