re: One of the more underrated parts of the radio call of Morris' HR

My favorite part is how pissed off and exasperated Hawthorne is after the batter before Morris strikes out with a runner on 3rd and 1 out to now make it 2 outs.
Defeated Jim: “Well now it’s gonna take a wild pitch, a passed ball, or something”. Next pitch, “that’s way back there. That’s way back there! Homerun!!!”

Yeah Bill told his entire origin story when Chris Blair had him on the Hearing Voices podcast. It was a really good listen
Cliff notes?

It has been edited...like the Bluegrass miracle call. He definitely said 3 run homer.
Yes, if you listen to the original call in all the excitement, he said three run homer. Later it was edited and cirrrcted just as Hunt became Henderson.

RC was hired a PA guy for the '89 season. Skip wanted a showman, an entertainer. between SECT and regionals skip added a midweek tuneup game or 2 and when RC couldnt make it (probably hungover) Franques filled in.. and Skip liked him much better and the rest is history. Herb Vincent informed RC that he was no longer needed and to this day he holds a grudge vs BF for stealing his gig.

Wait... does Bill mention that in the podcast?
If so, that's hilarious. I need to give it a listen just for vindictive Bill.

does Bill mention
Yes but he keeps it classy.
Also it sounds like BF invented walk up songs

Not too many nicer , more genuine guys than BF. Have heard the story from him and he only mentioned “I had an opportunity to fill in “.

I have a friend who thinks this is the funniest line in all of sports history. Anytime anyone brings up Hawthorne or the Morris HR that is the first thing he blurts out Hawthorne was a goober who often time left you confused as to what was actually happening on the field. But you could NEVER question his passion.
You and your friend are both stupid. You must not be older than 23 years old. Hawthorne was great in the 80s and 90s.

Hawthorne in my opinion is one of the greatest radio voices in college sports history. His voice was so recognizable and I have missed hearing him call the games ever since he left. I’ll take Hawthorne all day over hearing “You can pucker up and kiss that baby good bye” every single time

Hawthorne got the player right, he certainly carried the excitement to the fans at home, but he called it a three run homer. 2/3 ain’t bad.
Unless it was edited, he clearly says 2 run homer.
Post the original call.

I don’t care how many times I watch it, it’s got the same electric chill affect every time

I was 1 day before turning 13 and me and a few friends were watching before we had a game to play ourselves. We were so pumped when played. We hit nothing but pop ups, but hey, the tigers won

Spot on. Jim was a fan first and foremost, then the voice of the tigers

Is there a way to listen to the original call of him saying Jack Hunt?

My parents had the good fortune to be next door neighbors with Jim and Phyllis Hawthorne when I was a young teenager. Their daughter, Mandy was a friend in our Sherwood Forest neighborhood. Mr. Hawthorne was an idol of mine and I would have gotten into radio but I was afraid of aviation travels so I stuck with meteorology.?

Of the Bluegrass Miracle, it’s on Youtube

Was watching that game with my parents and brothers at the house I grew up in. Had a bowl of popcorn, cups of kool-aid, and pizza that all proceeded to go flying in every direction when that play happened. Remember it like it was yesterday. Of course my pops had the tv turned down and radio call on full volume. Was 9 or 10 years old. Great memory.

Jim could do a hell of a Conway Twitty impersonation when they needed to kill time on the Dale Brown shown in the early/mid 80s. The guy could sing his arse off.
