Pearson stands out as the worst. He’s struggling along with Neal and Kling. Milam is also slipping quickly in SEC play.

Tommy White .406
Hayden Travinski .457
Mac Bingham .426
Steven Milam .398
Michael Braswell III .434
Jared Jones .443
Brady Neal .390
Josh Pearson .359
Paxton Kling .398
Ashton Larson .414
Alex Milazzo .459
Jake Brown .435
Ethan Frey .357

It’s good to see that Braswell and Bingham have been stronger at the plate lately. JJ obviously sees Pearson and Neal as starters despite their numbers below their potential replacements. Both have been very streaky and neither of them are good enough in the field to offset low averages and lack of clutch hits IMO

Even worse if you look at SEC games only.

Milazzo .667
Braswell .541

Milam .265
Neal .217
Kling .118

Everyone else is between .300 - .400

I don’t understand why Milazzo isn’t getting more playing time

Milazzo .667

He has swung the bat in two games, 6 plate appearances, 4 at-bats, 2 hits, 2 walks, 1K.

quote:

Braswell .541

He has played all 9 games, 39 PAs, 28 ABs, 11 hits, 8 BB, 1 HBP , 5 Ks.

That is spectacular, yet some people on this board ask if we should try Guidry out at SS.

Frey is getting to play ahead of him with a lefty throwing.

Frey can’t play the outfield because of his injury. That puts him at DH and Travinski at catcher. There is no room for Milazo.

He would be on a differently constructed team. He's turned into a nice hitter the past 2 seasons, when he was previously pretty much an auto out. But he is a singles only hitter, and this team needs guys that can slug. Obviously at some point, a single is better than a strike out, but Jay's hoping somebody like Neal or Frey that can leave the yard or hit it off the wall for a double occasionally will eventually figure it out. Maybe that's Larson--he had a nice weekend. But I haven't seen his splits--he may just be doing that off RHP. Maybe it winds up being a platoon with him and Frey.

But he's given Neal, Pearson, Brown, Larson, Frey--and I guess you have to throw Kling in that group now--plenty of opportunities and none of them have grabbed it and not let go so far yet. Am very curious to see how the lineup looks this weekend.

At this point I think Milazzo should start at least one if not two weekend games. He gives the pitching staff more confidence behind the plate with his defense and leadership. Hard to put that into a stat sheet. Trav and Neals offense this past weekend was not enough of an advantage to warrant Milazzo not playing IMO.

I agree but I think that philosophy is changing. At this point, we need some guys that can get on base and put the ball in play. There’s too many solo home runs and strikeouts with RISP.

And I’m not trying to say Milazzo is some power hitter, but he currently has a higher overall slugging percentage than Milam, Kling, Brown, and Frey in addition to a higher BA and OB%

On base percentages are good, but they get left there in key situations.

Or with 2 outs and we never do anything with them.

Baseball is the worst when it comes to trying to predict when players will get hit or cold

It’s likely the classic case of the coach playing the guy he thinks has more upside. You have to think at some point Jay won’t have a choice though.

I have a hunch Milam is in a dip because of facing SEC pitching for the first time and he will soon start surging. I expect Neal to as well. Kling does not look promising. He seems to swing out of his cleats too much.

Kling looks at to many pitches. When hits it he is solid at someone.

I think kling should be the everyday CF. Bingham in left and at this point anyone that can hit higher than Person in RF.

Bingham
Milazzo
White
Travinski
Jones

Could be a potent lineup
