This thread exemplifies one of my favorite things about the Political Talk board.

One poster explains something correctly, and every other poster attacks him.

It's a beautiful thing to watch.

Her answer: "Not to my knowledge."

My parents grew up in the Midwest. My father was a Coast Guard aviator, so my family moved every couple of years, and I grew up all over the country but near the coast. My wife grew up in Baton Rouge. Her family is from Louisiana.

If my wife was asked: "You're not related to him at all?" I'd expect her to say, "No." She could not be 100% sure, but she'd feel confident enough to say no.

That question is lot more troublesome for folks who marry someone from the same area when both family lines go back decades or centuries.

If a wife in that situation is asked: "You're not related to him at all?"

I would not be surprised if she answered: "Not to my knowledge."

The issue is not the breath of the answer. The issue is the breadth of the question. "You're not related to him at all?"

People generally don't track relatives past third or fourth cousins. That's when you start getting into the notion of kissing cousins. After a point, certainty becomes difficult.

If I married a girl from an area where one of my parents grew up, and she was asked: "You're not related to him at all?"

I would not be surprised if she answered: "Not to my knowledge."

As a matter of fact, that would be about the only correct answer.

I understand her response leaves the door to swing either way. And I believe she knows that.

If someone asks me a question I truthfully know the answer to, it’s a very definitive Yes or No.
