I am doing a project on LSU sports for the year 1970. Any favorite sports memories for that year? Yes, I will be googling, but decided to start here. Geaux Tigers and thanks for any help you can provide.

Was the year LSU traveled to Madison Square Garden for the then big time NIT. LSU and Pistol Pete Maravich faced Al Maguire's Marquette Warriors. Came to be Pistol's final game for LSU, he scored 20 and Marquette handled LSU easily.

Two things stick out....We had to win the last two games against OLE Miss and Tulane to go to Orange. That season we had the stinging loss to Notre Dame (we were hosed). But, then sweet revenge with the blowout win and payback to Archie in TIger Stadium, 61-17! Casanova returned two punts and I will remember to the day I die, being in the South endzone with Ronnie Estay tackled Archie for a safety!
The crowd erupted.....world order was restored :)

Andy Hamilton and Bert Jones came to town to deer hunt that winter. Andy spoke at our church. Awesome memories.

Got to say: When you start a thread and insult people by calling them old timers, it kind of makes you sound like a jerk and probably won’t yield the results you desire.

Pete Maravich setting the NCAA scoring record, and LSU curb stomping Ole Miss 61-17. I listened to the former on the radio and attended the latter.

OF NOTE: In 1970 General Motors sponsored a halftime competition to name the best college band. On the Tiger Stadium gate entered by the Golden Band from Tigerland there is a plaque commemorating the fact that TGBFT was the winner of the title of "All-American College TV Band". (The award was actually presented in 1971 but the competition was the 1970 season). The competition never occurred again, as I suppose GM realized at the time that the LSU Band would win it every year. Winning the award resulted in the band performing in the New Year's Day evening Orange Bowl, packing up and flying overnight from Miami across country to San Francisco and arriving at the East-West Shrine Game in time for the 11 a.m. kickoff, performing a completely different halftime drill and show. Back then both halftime shows were nationally televised.

I suppose this could be considered LSU Band winning the National Championship.

In 1970, at a friend’s house during halftime of the LSU/ Alabama game, I delivered an eye watering, great sonorous blast of a fart that cracked a few windows in Norco, La.

Pete Maravich Breaking the scoring record that still stands could take up a lot of your project

I have the game film of the 1970 LSU Notre Dame game and the game film of the 1971 Orange Bowl vs Nebraska.

Do you want to talk to players from that team?

If I remember Archie had the cast on his arm that year. Ole Miss was always the big game back then. Gutsy of him to play but we beat the hell out of them.

as a bonafide "ole timer" i am not offended by the insult.

was part of a Boy Scout troop that helped to usher fans to their seats. watched many games in my youth.
great times and wonderful memories made.
