I don't agree with either of those statements. These are ratings that scouts use for draft purposes. And some are easily quantifiable like speed. 6.4-6.5 60 yd is an 80. Stevie's there. Laird might have the best OF glove in college. How is he not an 80 there?
I'm not criticizing Adam. I'm disagreeing and giving legit reasons and examples.
You disagree but all you can site is your opinion that these scales are meant for MLB starters. If that's the case, no one is above a 50 in hitting except for maybe Bregman and everyone's arm is at 45 or below.

Do stolen bases factor into the speed rating? To me they have to and only stealing 10 bags, it's hard for me to justify an 80
Posted on 2/8/15 at 11:48 am to Steamy Ray
Are you joking?
How many times was he allowed to steal? How did he do this summer at Cape Cod? Stealing a base is much more than speed just like catching a fly ball is much more than speed.

I don't know cape cod numbers but I did hear they ran more and were successful. I also acknowledge stealing bases is a skill that takes more than straight line speed.
I'm not tearing anyone down or saying they won't improve SB numbers with a different approach on the bases from the coaching staff, but to say a guy has 80 speed, world class speed, without having put up good SB numbers, that's hard for me to justify

i disagree with all of the disagreeing going on in this thread.

Then would you give an 80 to someone who only runs a 6.8 but has 40+ stolen bases?
To me, and most people who do these ratings, speed isn't directly associated with base running or stolen bases which rely on many other factors as well.

No I wouldnt. I'm saying it all has to factor in. 60 time, speed on the bases, etc. For me, an 80 speed is somebody who is elite at every aspect of baseball where speed comes into play.
That's just the way I look at it and to begin with, I asked if SB were used to come to that number, which you just answered. If it's solely on 60 time and Stevenson does in fact run 6.4-6.5, then that is world class speed

Pitching is def the area of concern this year obviously. Need our bats to come out hot so we can let the pitching work itself out.

It's all good. Just baseball fans discussing the team. All opinions have been respected.

What has happened to Bugg and Reynolds? Bugg was damn good last year as a freshman, Reynolds was damn good the year before that, and both seem to have been buried with all of the talk regarding the new arms. Bugg's spring stats aren't bad at all, either.

They will both be used out of the pen.

quote:IMO, with his frame, he should be sitting in the mid 90's. I was really hoping he could gain a few MPH in the off season. Nice to see a CENLA guy (Stallings) getting some quality PT.

Good write-up on relief. It looks like to start, Bouman and Norman are switching roles with Normal starting midweek and Bouman being asked to do long relief.
I like this tactic of having Bouman available if a young arm struggles mid-game, especially if it's due to control issues.

Stallings will be the sleeper in this group of newcomers.

Yep. Cause we know his max is 6 innings.

It looks like Bouman and Norman could be interchangeable.
I would love if one of Reynolds or Newman could lock down a midweek gig leaving both available.

I respect your opinion, and if that is how Adam4848 is rating his players, that explains some of his high grades. The rating scale from 20 to 80 is not a college scale. If you think about it, Mainieri uses a 10 point scale to rate a player. He rated Ibarra as a 10 at 3rd base. The 20-80 point scale is for MLB players and those that the MLB is scouting. What good would it be for a MLB scout to come to a game and say that a kid is an 80 talent in speed, when he may not even be able to compete at the MLB level. When the scale is used for college players, it compares the player to players in the MLB. And, it has nothing to do with their potential. If you have a player that a scout says has a tool rated a 60, he is saying that he is above the average MLB player in that tool...right now. If you have a 50, the college player already exhibits talent that is better than half of the MLB players playing today. I would like to know if Adam4848 would respond to this discussion?
