We had a bunch of company for the holidays and some of us slept in an RV we had. I listened to this game on radio in the RV. I was 8 at the time.

not so fast. he was part of the team for a short time, but he never had a tackle to his credit.

ETA: Mike was a linebacker and fullback for the Lee High Rebels in my day. I can tell you that it would take half our defense to bring him down. On defense he hurt both of our running backs. One had cracked ribs. The oddest thing is we beat them 20-14 that night.

I was at that game, barely got to our season ticket seats in U11 Row DD before kickoff. It was a warm and muggy afternoon, the first afternoon game I went to. What a great start to the game! Sullivan looked great, tossing it Terry Beasley, a good receiver. Our D was staunch that day, and the blocked XP saved us.

I remember how p*ssed everybody was that year before the season ending Tulane game that the Domers were gonna rescind their self-inflicted 44 year bowl hiatus and play the Shorthorns in the Cotton, ending any NC hopes for us.

During halftime of the Tulane game, two students had painted "Notre Damn" on a sheet and paraded it around the entire stadium. As they passed each section everybody cheered their sentiment. That was the beginning of my hatred of Domers.

Great game on TV during the day, remember the first play and Pat Sullivan throwing the ball on a great tiger defense. I believe it was a Nationally televised game?

I was at that game. LSU had Jimmy Gilbert throw a halfback pass for a touchdown on the first play of the game. George Bevan blocked an extra point in the 3rd quarter and that was the difference in the game. Auburn was not undefeated coming in. Tennessee had beaten them earlier in the year. I think that was one of LSU's best football teams of all time. I was a freshman that year.

would have played tx but nd was the choice... Tigers decided to skip other bowls.... Went 9-1
I remember that one so well. I was heartbroken by the team's vote to not bowl, but I later realized they and coaches were even more heartbroken and for them it was a matter of pride. I think it was the birth of a deep seated hatred for ND by LSU fans (given this was the very first time ND would go bowling - by team/school choice - snobs), and because they were the media darlings of the day, lowly LSU got shafted to make room).
And thus too did it enforce the growing notion that the media had no love for LSU.

I remember that play well, I was in the LSU student section half way up on the 25 yard line.

Interesting post. Thanks.

I thought the student section was farther around on the west side but hard to recall. The band was over there too if I remember correctly. I went to LSU in the 80's. They started pushing the students and band to the north end zone in the 90's I believe.

For the life of me, I can't remember why, but I missed that game. That was my first year at LSU and I didn't miss many games 69-72. Many great games I saw but I missed that one.

The greatest game I ever saw in Tiger Stadium. I'll never forget it. Day game, raining. Tigers' first play from scrimmage was a halfback pass to Andy Hamilton. Touchdown. Auburn marched right down the field on the next possesion. Just like that: 7-7. Blocked extra point was the difference. I was a senior in high school, and it was the last time I went to an LSU game with my grandfather who died the next spring. I've been going to LSU games for over 50 years, and this one is burned in my memory.

The 1969 team was the best I ever saw until this century, and I have very fond memories of it. Absolutely dominant on defense but let a skinny redhead from Ole Miss get away from them one too many times. Only game they lost.

My first LSU game in Tiger Stadium; my older brother was a freshman in Tiger Band, and I was a junior in high school. I was across the stadium from you in South Stadium and as Gilbert took the toss and slowed down, I screamed to my dad, "He's gonna throw it!" That's when I spotted Hamilton wide open and knew it would be a touchdown.

A great play to be sure, and a great game. It took a blocked field goal and a blocked extra point for LSU to pull out a 21-20 victory.

This is correct. I was in Tiger Band from 1972-1975, and I had a great seat on the West side on the 37 yard line, around halfway up. Any changes with the band and the student section happened well after my time.

Great post and thanks for highlighting one of the all-time great LSU teams. It's my dad's favorite LSU squad.

Allowing 39 ypg in a a run-heavy era is really impressive.

About half way through this video is the opening play

I was at the game - in graduate school at the time. It rained that morning, but the sun came out in Tiger Stadium for the game.

It's been a long time so I may be mistaken about how far the student section went down the west side of the stadium. I was one of the first students in when they opened up. I started to talk about the formation in detail in the OP but then realized that I might have had that confused too. There is a little video of late 1960s highlighs on you tube play is on it.

Anyway, it was a fabulous game.

Auburn coach Shug Jordan said of Hamilton "Shoot,I was the closest guy to him."
