College football coaches (with the exception of Saban and now Smart) are overpaid. They get paid tremendous sums of money, fail, and move on counting their condos and country clubs. Then, they wind up making more jack as assistant coaches for other future failures.

It is nearing the point where the only differences between colleges will be their names and the colors of their uniforms. The athletes are, or are quickly becoming professional athletes not amateur student athletes. Perhaps only the service academies will remain relatively unaffected. You will ultimately be watching (are now to a large extent) professional sports teams masquerading as college teams. It’s the nationalization and homogenization of college sports and it’s rapidly becoming irrelevant to a lot of people.

unfortunately, I think you are spot on about how long getting this defense back to par will take in terms of talent

This is not going to be a short road. One that likely takes 1-2 MORE years just to get our defensive talent back to par with the rest of the SEC.

I think most people recognize that most of our issues need to be addressed on the recruiting trail, but there is some cause for concern that it's not happening.

We knew DB was a concern that needed to be addressed last season and we whiffed on a few DBs in last year's class.

Looking ahead, we are currently the 10th ranked class for 2024 and 7th ranked for 2025. That's not horrible, but it's also not really making up ground against the competition.

We just have to go the way of Texas/A&M and throw money at it until it gets better. NIL changes everything.

While not solely to blame (COVID transfer rules, the new era of semi-professional college football, etc.), your point is certainly valid.

Brian Kelly has been the coach for almost 2 years. Even missing spots on the roster are increasingly his responsibility.

Defensively, this team is barely on FCS level or maybe equivalent to a poor non-P5 defense. It is a shame, because merely average defense would have the team competitive for post-season, or at least another Top 10/12 run (at minimum, which is what this offense should guarantee).

Frustratingly, there are very occasional flashes from the defense (3Q against Ole Miss), but it just isn't enough to keep this team from sliding to very disappointing 7-5 with 8-4 being best case for the regular season.

I felt bad about the team last year after the opener, but there was still fight in that team. There is no fight in this defense ... at all. That was obvious in the FSU game.

When I sat in the Superdome, my wife asked if we would beat Clemson that night. I said I am pretty confident in this team, but I would accept being nothing for the next 10 if we won this game.

This is all my fault guys.
