If Bama can sneak into the playoffs, assuming SEC champ gets in, lets say Auburn. Georgia then would get Peach bowl leaving us to get the Cotton bowl. So do we actually want Bama to make it in, or is us getting the Cotton bowl even if all that happens still unlikely? I just want to play a good opponent and we have a better chance at one in a NY6 game.

The loser of Auburn Georgia likely gets it.

Bama, Auburn, and Georgia are ahead of us in the pecking order. We would have needed Auburn to lose to Georgia and Bama to have a chance at a NY6 bowl.

Bama is not going to make the cut even with the ESPN ball sucker.

As an LSU fan you don't want your biggest rival to make the playoffs!!!!! It would be a major blow to their program. We've been playing in mid level bowls the past 5 years. One more year of that isn't gonna hurt us. We just need to win that bowl game no matter who we play.

The right outcome, especially if Auburn wins the SECCG. No rematches.

That's not exactly how it works. For example, the Big 10 got four teams in last season. That was possible due to their final CFP rankings.

Basically you have the playoff games that take the top 4 teams, then the top 5 teams (according to the CFP rankings) from each conference AND the highest ranking Group of 5 team are placed into 6 of the remaining 8 slots, leaving 2 'wild card' spots for the NY6 games.

The 2 wild card teams are the highest ranked teams in the CFP that do not qualify for the tie in. This means that LSU would have to at least finish as #12 to be considered, and even then, they would need all of the 6 tie in teams to be ranked in the top 12 as well.

Basically we need Ohio State to lose by a lot, Notre Dame to fall far tomorrow, Stanford not to jump us, and jump Michigan State as well as Washington state and Mississippi State (some more plausible than others).

Let's say Clemson beats Miami, Oklahoma beats TCU, Wisconsin beats the snot out of OSU, Auburn beats UGA, USC creams Washington, and UCF beats Memphis. If all that happens, you are looking at (possibly):

1-4 Clemson, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Auburn
5. Alabama (SEC tie)
6. USC (P12 tie)
7. Penn State (B10 tie)
8. UCF (G5 tie)
9. UGA (wildcard)
10. Miami (ACC tie)
11. LSU (wildcard)

12. Michigan State
13. Stanford
14. Notre Dame
15. TCU (B12 tie)

While this scenario is specific and unlikely, the Citrus bowl does payout 500k more than the non-semifinal NY6 bowls. It is far less exciting though.

No way 2 SEC teams get into playoffs. Alabama is not a top 4 team anyway, their best win is against LSU.

It won't matter whether they get in the playoff unless we miraculously jump Georgia in the CFP rankings.

Could've been possible had they lost to Georgia Tech on Saturday.

How would auburn winning help us? UGA needs to win. Then you have a 3 loss auburn team that lost to 3 loss LSU.
USC beats Stanford. Oklahomo beats TCU. Wisconsin blasts OSU. UCF beats Memphis. That gets us to #11, assuming we can jump all those teams that just lost.

Even if we find a way to get to #11 or 12 and the choice comes down to Notre Dame or LSU to get the last bid to the NY6 game, it's going to be Notre Dame.

I don't think LSU could jump either of those teams. Not with the quality wins that Auburn has and they don't have any bad losses.

Auburn winning also makes our best win look even better, improving our case over the other teams.

Notre Dame does not have a tie in to the NY6. Their only chance to make it is to be one of the two highest ranking teams in the CFP at the end of the season. So if LSU is ranked ahead of them, then there is no way Notre Dame could go over LSU.

Of course the committee could manipulate the rankings to force Notre Dame in the NY6, but that would never happen, right..?

I also thought USC was playing Washington in the pac 12 title game. USC playing Stanford throws a big wrench in there because Washington can't lose anymore.

Looks like we're headed to the Citrus or Outback

There is no SEC tie-in to the Cotton Bowl. The Selection Committee will place two at-large teams into the Cotton, and LSU is not ranked high enough to get in.

I repeat, the Cotton is not an option for LSU.
