Im a huge LSU fan, I joined the marines out of high school so I didn't go to LSU. I dont think that makes me any less of a fan.

I don't see anything wrong with this. I was raised on LSU's campus while my dad obtained all 3 of his degrees there. When it was time for me to go off to college he pushed for me to leave Baton Rouge he did not want me to make bad decisions and end up in trouble. I am die hard Tiger fan and have experienced everything on that campus even though I did not attend. My father is a proud Alum though.

My bigger issue is with "free agent" fans. The ones who bought a ton of LSU gear starting around 2000 ish, only to replace it with the Scarlet Letter ("A") gear in 2010.

This is an entirely different phenomenon, and like you I’ll never understand it. These folks aren’t “fans” of any team in the sense those of us in this thread are fans.

Tell your buddy to STTDB. That or just get better friends.

Saying that you have to be an alumnus to be a true fan means that no kid under the age of 17 can be a Tiger fan. I have been going since I was a kid, I have the same seats that my grandfather had for football, have had baseball season tickets for decades, support TAF, my daughter goes to LSU, my wife graduated from LSU twice, but I am not, myself, an alumn. I did attend some classes here because it was convenient, but I graduated from Loyola. Doesn't make me any less of a fan.

LSU is the flagship university and the pride of Louisiana. It is more than just a place to get your degree.

Ultimately, LSU alumni and 'real' fans don't want idiots acting like trashy assholes while wearing our colors.
I have a few examples I've witnessed:

1. (VT 2007) Drunken 21 yr old in an LSU shirt berates a large group of VT fans walking down Tower Drive. He was blocking their way and knocking hats off their heads until a tailgate group and a cop intervened and apologized to them as this was also the somber week after the VT Mass Shooting. So the mood that day was particularly inclusive to visiting team, making said idiot look even more worser of a jackass than a normal gameday.

2. (2017 Orange Beach) Trashy family at the beach with an LSU Ez-UP, blasting vulgar hip-hop on the biggest bluetooth speaker in the world, smoking 4 cigarettes at a time, and yelling "frick Bama" at every one of the 92,360,234 Bama fans on the coast of... ALABAMA.

3. (Section 414 before Bama game last season). Guy above us threw a cup of ice way down on the visiting Gump fans in the lower bowl. Everyone around him pointed the fricker out to the cops. He and his buddy probably spent $400(not usual STH) on tix and got kicked out 20 minutes before kickoff.

These examples are primarily what Rustles the Jimmies of 'real' fans.

1. The school was not affordable. 2. Athletic scholarship or a walkon.
I like those guide lines. I am adding one because it is common around these parts.

3. Did not attend college. A bunch of die hard LSU fans went straight to work.

Yep. I was just referencing LSU fans who went to a different college. That's a good rule to add b/c you're damned right about going to work after HS.
Plant Operators, armed forces members, and construction workers money spends at the LSU ticket office just like the school teachers or engineers.

Ask your buddy if it is okay for a resident of CHicago to be a Minnesota Vikings fan!

MANY LSU fans both went to other in-state schools or didn’t attend college at all.

I'm not sure why you would even entertain this discussion. You know if you're a fan or not. The notion that you can't be a fan of a sports program/institution if you didn't go there is utterly asinine. It's usually in an attempt to separate trash ball fans from tarnishing the image of the fanbase but it's pretty stupid and unnecessary IMO.

I grew up in LA. Have been going to games since I could walk. Went to a small college other than LSU because it was a better fit at the time but other family including father went to LSU.

I watch every game and sometimes travel to watch (bowl games, baseball games, etc). My son watches with me and gets completely dressed in LSU gear head-to-toe for every game.

I practically get physically ill when the lose. The world is a better place when they win. I couldn’t stop pulling for them if I tried.

I consider myself a fan.

I attended LSU but earned my degree elsewhere.

I am as big of an LSU fan as there is and I don’t need a piece of paper to tell me that.

Fandom is about the emotion and passion you have for your team. If you care, you are a tiger fan. Doesn’t matter where you went to school.

Yep.. and i know a few people who grew up LSU fans then went out of state to school, or vice versa.. one girl i know from Kentucky went to LSU and roots for LSU football, but KY basketball.. another i know went to Ole Miss , but goes to a lot of LSU home football games, and roots hard for them *except* when they play OM, etc.

You're an LSU fan. I don't get why u have to prove how legit of a fan you are. Hell, I'm a new Orleans Saints fan and I'm not from new orleans, nor do I live there or plan to ever live there. Some people are just stupid man.

From Tennessee inherited my fandom from my dad and grandfather who are from Louisiana and have degrees from LSU. LSU is more likely to get money from me than the college that I graduated from.
