It's not whether or not you're matriculating for an advanced degree, but I take some amount of pride that the department that issued my degree, the Department of Geography and Anthropolgy, was ranked in the top 15 in the nation - of all schools, public and private. This is the very department that the "goober" would be studying Archeology in. There are other things besides the football team to take pride in at LSU.
It's too bad that you couldn't appreciate what we had there while you were in school.
Good point. I bet he doesn't realize that research brings in more money than football and athletics.

Emerald Mound near Natchez, MS is BAD arse. Just a recommendation. Definitely worth a road trip, IMO, especially if you are already in the area.
Thanks, I pass through Natchez often, I'll have to make a stop.

...or that in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Geography and Anthropology takes in more grant money than any other department - by far.

You won't be disappointed if you like that sort of thing.
The mound is huge. It is one of those squared off and flattened mounds. Those were the bigger ones. They resembled the Aztec pyramids only they are obviously made of dirt. The biggest one is at Cahokia, in present-day E. St. Louis, Illinois.
Emerald Mound is free, as far as I know. There isn't much too the site besides the mound. They built a path and put up some informational signs and stuff. The scene is kind of surreal. You'll probably have the place to yourself. It is a truly amazing (IMO) historical landmark right in our backyard that nobody ever visits.

TxTiger82.....I don't think anyone really cares what you have to say about Indian Mounds....or football for that matter.
Road Trip? Please.

The Indian Mounds are not burial grounds. They were used as view points for the river. The indians would go up there to check the level of the river without actually having to go to the .
Why did they build two then? Seems like one woulda worked

People were tearing the things up. I noticed this Saturday when I saw they were roped off. The tops are all worn and stuff.
When the grass grows back, it'll be fine.

Instead of only closing the mounds for the 7 or 8 home games "because of high traffic", how bout only opening them for the home games and closing them all other times of the year?
Seriously?
Like folks have said, the concern was erosion.
Someone walking by does essentially no damage to the grass's ability to hold the topsoil in, mostly because it hardly ever happens and the activity is just walking.
You stick an 60-80 lb kid on the top, let him slide down, then have him quickly run up, slide down, repeat for 2 hours....that is going to have a more significant impact as the grass tries to "recover"
And whoops, right when it does that, you come right back the next week.

From the article
"Ellwood said parts of the LSU Mounds will be excavated next year for research, which will be open to the public to watch"
Uh.. so don't let your kid slide down them on carboard because we're going to start digging into them. And we all know digging into the mounds is going to be good for them.
Errrrr... ok.
