The Indian Mounds are not burial grounds. They were used as view points for the river. The indians would go up there to check the level of the river without actually having to go to the river.
this is WAY more believable than burial ground.

I say tear down all the buldings in the area since the ground they were built on was walked on by indians?

Read the article before you make statements like that. Those mounds are historic and landmarks of LSU and should be protected.
I'm sure you'd be mad if a bunch of yankees played games on a confederate burial site.
In fact next time down South I'm going to do that and use your logic.
What the frick are you talking about? I read the full article. The FACT is they really have no fricking clue what the mounds were used for. The FACT is that it is just as likely to be a "historical" indian landfill as it is to be a burial ground. People have been walked over and on those mounds FOR THOUSANDS of years. To say that some kids are destroying it is just fricking absurd.
BTW how is it an LSU landmark in ANY shape or form? It sorta predates LSU in a big way.
WTF does yankees and confederates have to do with anything? Are you just normally that stupid? They dont have war reenactments on battlefields where people died and are buried? Dont they have many family parks on battlefields?? Should I really care that they do that cause I dont..

For christ sakes, people, they just want to keep grass growing on them to keep erosion to a minimum.
No one is saying that you can't go on them ever, just not on those 6 or 7 days a year when they get the most traffic.
And as far as focusing on more important matters, they're just going to put up some fencing, just like around the oaks, and some signs. If people are caught on them, they will just be asked to get off. It's not like they're going to hire special "Indian Mound Police" or something.
Some of you people make this out to be some sort of Aggie situation.
Yes, they've been around for thousands of years. Yes, they are showing signs of erosion. Can we just show a little respect for a National Historic Place while we conduct research as to their original purpose?
Some of you will bitch about absolutely ANYthing.

Putting up the barricads years ago was a good idea, IMHO. I remember when the drunken assclown ran over the girl....
Yep, I was drunk in my bed in the basement of Hodges and heard the girl scream....the assclown whoop-de-dooed the mounds in a Spitfire, I believe, turned himself in a few days later

I kind of like the "ancient tailgating" theory somebody gave, myself.
"Native Tailgaters"- I like it!

I thought it was a jeep.
They put those low walls up around them right after.

I'm 63 years young and I slid down those mounds when I was a kid.
I'm pretty much the same age and I remember with great fondness what I used to do on those mounds after football games.

Why don't they just take a picture of the ground like they do to find oil and see what is in the dirt????

So let me get this straight. Fans are doing damage to the mounds on gameday but excavating the mounds for research next year will not cause irreversible damage. Give me a break.
My first memories of the LSU campus and LSU football is climbing to the top and rolling down the mounds. While I do agree that riding bikes and skateboards and that heavy foot traffic on the mounds after a hard rain could cause damage I find it hard to believe that a few kids and adults could cause more damage that the lawnmowers that cut the grass and mother nature itself.
Don't worry alumni and fans I assume LSU already has a solution to the problem. Build a fence around them just like they did every oak tree on campus. We should just change the alma mater to Stately Oaks, Broad Magnolias and Wrought Iron Fences shade Inspiring Halls.

I've heard it was this (because without the levees, the river would come up to highland road area.) and a territorial marker.

Those mounds could be gone tomorrow and I don't think that they would be missed. I don't think that the mounds made LSU the university that it is. They're not mounds like they are at LSU, but as a kid, we used to roll down the hills at the Spanish fort in Baton Rouge.

wow are they really? FTR I find this type of stuff amazing and super interesting. SO they are studying them to see what they were used for?

The administration is closing the indian mounds to the public so Gary Crowton can see the stadium clearly after Les kicks him out of the booth.
