He did not give a signal that meets the criteria of the rules:
Valid Signal
ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signaled his intention by extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once.
He stuck his right hand up and slashed it down to his side while moving to his left.
good post

Good post.
What about invalid Fair Catch signals. What does the rule say about protection there?
I was thinking they are afforded protection under invalid as well.

i would like to know if he signaled as well.
He did
I have no doubt at all that the SEC wanted USC to win that game last night. Its was rediculously obvious based off the no calls in the game. So called late hit on Loston, several no calls on clear PI, and obviously the fair catch.

it was a quick half assed wave of the hand
Yes, and it wasn't above his head, as someone suggested. It was maybe shoulder high, and outward, like a one-sided safe call.
The ironic part is that if he had made a safe call with both hands to let his teammates know to clear out on a short kick, then grabbed the ball after a bounce and tried to return it, that would be a penalty.

The most confusing part was that the official closest the play blew the whistle as soon as he caught it, which means he saw the fair catch, but then doesn't throw the flag for the tackle. It was a very confusing play.

Exactly. A one-sided rule, that's for sure. Or at least one-sided implementation of the rule by Officials.

But if we can call penalties based upon "intent" now, can't we say that he INTENDED to call a fair catch?

Well played sir. Well played!

If he signaled, why did he attempt to run after the catch?
Posted on 10/14/12 at 10:37 am to tigerskin
I was at the game, he did wave for fair catch. But I think the reason for the no call was because he made a move after the catch like he was gonna return it. Didn't get to see the replay tho, so take it fwiw.

Because he was hit.

After he took several steps with the ball.
I thought he called for a fair catch. I also thought he ran with the ball after the catch.

I was at the game, and he clearly signaled for the fair catch.

Give me a fricking break. The SEC wanted SC to win, and these half-arse questionable missed calls were the best they could come up with? I swear you conspiracy people...
