Well you must keep up with college football more than me and I've been doing so closely since the mid 80s. I had never heard of him once and wasn't all that thrilled when LSU hired him.
Regardless, I don't think it's debatable that his elite potential was realized only after he came to LSU so yes, I still believe LSU made him. And yes he is the enemy now so frick him.

I credit Saban with getting LSU where it is today. Saban is the one that wanted the academic center, Saban is one that wanted the new football only facility. Saban is the one who continued what what Dinardo started. It isn't just the recruiting that allowed LSU to become the monster it is today. The academic center and football ops center are things Saban insisted on and have helped to keep LSU at the top in regards to facilities. What are some of the things Miles' has gotten done which will help LSU after he's gone?

I think they made each other. Saban could not do it without the elite talent that Louisiana provides, but LSU couldn't get it done for like 45 years and how many coaches since 58.
Pat Forde was once asked about which coach underperformed the most and he said any coach at LSU in the last 30 years. No way LSU shouldn't have been a top 5 program all those years.
Saban came to LSU at the perfect time.

Before he came here if I'd asked you to name the best college coaches would Saban have instantly popped into your mind as one? Not mine then, but surely so after he won it all at LSU.
Were the Dolphins beating down his door when he was a Michigan State? Nope, but they were when he was at LSU.
IMO LSU clearly helped bring Nicky into the elite level of coaches.

That's completely false. Before DiNardo arrived, that's the way it was, but Gerry D stopped most of the exodus. Saban did even better, but Gerry D stopped the hemoraging.

Nick Saban did a great job at LSU, but he left after the 2004 season, what's happened since then is due to the current coaching staff and administration.

There's a certain degree of truth to this, but it takes a lot more than just the right coach to build a program. You have to have the administrators willing to do what it takes, including hiring the right coach. Joe Dean was content as long as the AD was in the black, Emmert realized LSU was leaving money on the table by having a 2nd rate FB program. Everyone says the downfall of DiNardo was not firing Lou Tepper. But Tepper was only the DC the last 2 years. Carl Reese was the DC for DiNardo's first 3 winning seasons. He left to take the DC job at Texas with Mack Brown for a good bit more than we were willing to pay. Hell if we were willing to pony up we could have had Brown in 94 instead of DiNardo, but Dean was too cheap.
Saban did a lot, but so did Mark Emmert and a lot of others. Saban (like Emmert) realized the potential for the program that's why he took the job.

excellant post PJ. Good points, he was doing well at MSU, I had heard of him as well. Can't say he was my first choice but I thought it was a good hire. Unless they hire some arse clown, i usually take a wait and see approach.

DiNardo "brought back the magic" by heavily recruiting in state players. LSU was bound to succeed no matter who was really coaching this decade. Saban was in the right place at the right time. LSU made him into who he is today.

There would not have been a period like this at LSU if not for Mark and the TAF stepping up to the plate to FINALLY put up the funds needed to make LSU a consistant player both in the SEC and nationally.
That's where the current foundation for the elite LSU success started.
Nothing against Nick, but if he was sooooo vital to the LSU success, then why/how has LSU continued to improved and, in fact, in some ways top anything Nick ever did 8 years after his departure?

Nick Saban is a terrific football coach, and I will always be greatful for what he did for LSU.
And, I think we really, really lucked out by getting Les Miles. I actually think Miles is every bit the equal of Saban. Considering the previous coaches we've had, we all should be greatful that we got Miles. I know I am.
But, do I appreciate Coach Saban? You bet I do!!

Why didn't LSU do the same for Stovall, Archer, Hallman, & Dinardo?
DiNardo got the ball rolling in returning LSU back to being a respected program in college football.
Saban made LSU a national force. The man knows how to take a program from average to elite. There's no disputing that.
Any LSU fan that tries to discredit or doesn't appreciate what he and his staff did are lying to themselves.
