Part of what I do is graphic design work...so yeah, there are some pretty specific things I look at when it comes to logos.
FWIW, I hated Toonces from the day it was leaked. HORRIBLE design.

I don't think anyone thought there was anything wrong with either per se...they simply wanted something newer that would garner new buys because of the new design.
My problem from the get go was that LSU clearly did not give Phoenix Design any specifics or any framework in which to work when coming up with the Tiger design.
Other than the colors, there was nothing even remotely familiar about the design for LSU fans to cling to. For decades LSU had been associated with that circular Tiger head logo...so in my opinion they should have tried to update THAT design, rather than throw it out and start from scratch. Modernize it, clean it up, remove some of the unneccesary bits, etc. And for a alternative, try something new...but make damn sure it looks better than the one you're paid to replace!
As for the text LSU logo...I'm actually a big fan on the Geaux Font LSU. My only complaint is that I wish LSU had not had them create a whole alphabet with that type font. If they had just used it for "LSU" it would look more like a text logo and less like they are simply spelling LSU with the new font.

The sad part is they paid a lot of money for Toonces, but we got this slightly better crap free for our viewing pleasure.

It still looks like a ball with hair on it, albiet purple and gold hair. Sorry, I can't vote for it. What's wrong with a TIGER, not a cartoon?

I like it better than this. It's really not bad. I still like that avatar with the blood dripping teeth, though. I would like us to move to something like that...minus the bloody teeth.
