this is all about ratings. espn shows alot of sec games and is making sure they have juicy stuff to talk about so that people will tune in. cheating in recruiting is the hot topic right now. the ncaa isn't dumb enough to not be aware of this dynamic.
the quality of the video and who was on it are irrelevant because lsu asked for video and got video. end of story. if lyles mixed in other stuff to pad the video, so what? lsu hits the fastforward button.
wetzel is a putz on this issue. auburn is getting away with murder and he's commenting on lsu? seriously, $6k?

I don't care if ESPN is reporting on this instead of something else... there's not a finite number of stories. But it seems paying $6000 for 32 DVD's of questionable quality, including videos of Mettenberg is leigitmate, particularly when you consider Oregon paid $25,000, the $6k was ADVERTISED on the website (well, $3000/state), and LSU kept track of this stuff contemparaneously.
I also don't think if the NCAA was prepared to bring the hammer down, they would have been quite so loadatory in their report yesterday. I think the NCAA is investigating LSU's package as a contrast to how Oregon conducted itself. And UO suffers at every point of the comparison. They paid more, an unadvertised price not available to the public, got less, and did not keep records contemporaneously of what they received. Oh yeah, and they got the player Lyles had influence over.

LSU is fine. While argumentative, they paid for an advertised product and got it. They won't be punished for poor product quality.
The situation with UO is completely different.
LSU may get mud slung on them for being careless in accepting a shitty product, but thats it.

POST OF THE MONTH

While i don't like the bad press, especially as arbitrary as this story is concerning lsu, E.S.P.N./A.B.C. loves this story because they have the opening game between the two teams involved. They create this mountain out of the mole hill to generate ratings for the game.
At the end of the day, lsu will be fine. UO, i don't know. This is basically like the e. porter story as far as lsu is concerned. a lot of fluff with no meat. E.S.P.N. probaby realizes it as well, however, if they can use it to generate large ratings for the opening game, they don't care. they profit for it. hypocritical, yes.
after the game, i don't think you hear anything else about this story as far as lsu is concerned. The facts and evidence is on lsu's side.

Wtf? Nobodys ever bought a dvd thinking it was some fabulous movie...gotten it home played it....then realized it sucked? Cmon lsu used numerous recruiting video services. Take from it what serves the purpose and chaulk the rest up as crap. I get crappy services after I explain exactly what I want al the time. Doesn't mean you can not pay for it. Complain yes, but still gotta pay. 6k ain't gonna buy seastrunk to lsu. It mighta bought a whisper in the kids ear, but wasnt meant to buy the kid.

Baloo is correct. This wasn't about 32 DVDs. This was about getting film on two guys: Anthony Denham and Zach Mettenberger. To get that film, we had to buy the two full state packages. There's a good chance we didn't even watch any DVD that didn't have Denham, Mettenberger or maybe a handful of other guys we wanted to check out.

right back at ya. This was about getting film on these two prospects. But more importantly, this investigation is probably about putting Orego's actions in context. this requires an investigation of LSU, but I'd be surprised if we were the subect of the investigation. I don't think al and LSU are in the clear, but i doubt we're in deep waters.

I hear ya. Hopefully the hyperventilists in our fanbase can start thinking and not fearing.
Willy Lyles had no influence over either Mettenberger or Denham. He had FILM of them. And we bought that FILM. Perfectly legal and perfectly within existing NCAA regulations.

. Miles told CBS that he didn't "who Willie Lyles was" until December 2010. But, (a) this 2008 post from a company with whom Lyles was affiliated suggests they'd been "friends for years," and (b) I would think Miles had at least heard of Lyles since LSU paid $20k to him from 2008-2009.
2. Brick Haley denied knowing who Lyles was when he showed up with him at Trevon Randle's high school, but (a) Randle said that Lyles and Haley were "close",and (b)Haley was the one who months later cut a $6k check to Lyles on behalf of LSU, and the invoice itself was referenced Haley on it.
3. Randle is quoted as saying that Lyles "knows about every restaurant in Baton Rouge, and he introduced me to all of them." LINK. By itself this is nothing (even though he's from Houston), but when considered with...
4. Larry Porter is supposed to have known Lyles "from his time as assistant head coach at LSU", who was recruiting Lache Seastrunk for us.
Yes, all this info is old. But there are alot of inconsistencies that, I hope, can be plausibly explained.
Do you work for Yahoo Sports or something?

Really? I know I'm not suppose to be on this board but LSU bought 6000 worth of DVDs just to get film on two QBs?
Wouldn't it have been easier just to call their respective juco coaches and got the high quality video from them for about 30.00 in Fedex charges?
Ok Im gone now, no need to flame me, I wont be coming back

Sure. If you just want highlights.
This is the thing that annoys me with the people saying you can get the same stuff on YouTube.
Guess what, I can put my own highlight reel on YouTube. And I could probably throw this football over that mountain on that video.
It's about getting unbiased video.
