New Orleans places Saints above LSU, but it's not an either-or...they co-exist pretty well. But it's hard to do a night game in BR Saturday night then tailgate for a noon kickoff on Sunday.

Meh...Maybe true.

But that is why the Saints are New Orleans' team, but LSU is Louisiana's team! Don't take that wrong, I love the Saints and always have, but the Tigers will always trump the Saints!

Depends on where you went to high school. If you went to a school that did not send many people to college, they don't care.

+1000000000000000

out of my senior class at archbishop shaw....87 of 88 at least started college....my educated guess is that of those who started somewhere around half graduated....

the VAST majority stayed in state....only 4 that I know of graduated from LSU, the rest were mostly spread between Nicholls, Southeastern, and UNO....i only know of one who went to college out of state.....

but i'd be willing to place money that over 3/4 of my senior class are LSU fans, no matter what!!!

It didn't seem strange to me at all that so many "of us" went to Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, UVA, Auburn, etc.

This is what I don't get. I can see leaving the state to go to a prestigious private school like Vanderbilt, Duke, etc. I could even see leaving for a really good state school like Michigan or UVa, but to leave the state just to go to another cookie-cutter state school that is basically the same as LSU makes no sense. Why pay the extra out-of-state tuition for basically the same experience and education? Out of that group you mentioned, only UVa is significantly better than LSU, but the others are essentially the same.

i visited UVA last year with the south jersey chick, who has connections down there....

i was a bit weirded out by the place....with the secret societies and the city of Charlottesville (which makes Baton Rouge look like a metropolis!!!)

I agree! There is NO sense in it.

Whatever, my intent was get a "pulse" on the mindset of the high school kids these days in NOLA. To hear from those who are in better position than I am as to whether or not these kids consider LSU their premier choice for college. I am sure that TOPS has contributed to the rise of LSU's attractiveness, and that is really good.

I am still really pissed at the Mannings...(case in point, I guess - since they went to Newman)

I agree. I grew up in NO. and now live in Covington and many ,if not most Catholic schools are very pro LSU. Some of the private schools are snooty and God forbid that little Skippy or Muffy go to LSU.

Very True. One of Middle Lithette's friends Mom has tried to talk her out of going to LSU saying it "would be such a waste" since she's ranked #1 in her class.

Private schools, especially in NOLA, were notorious for sending kids out of state to show they are "better" than the other schools. It was basically a snobby behavior from rich kids and their families since they were "Too Good" for LSU.

The culture of the rich status whore types have to keep up appearences and part of that is blowing off the lowly in-state school and going out of state.........

Folks, it's not secret that the "good" public schools in New Orleans are few and far between, and as a historically Catholic town, the Cat'lic schools have always been strong.

It's also not a secret that kids that went to private schools, no matter which state, often go to other than their state schools.

I was at LSU in the 70s, and there were lots of NOLA people there, from yats to uptown Jesuit/De La Salle/Brother Martin to O. Perry Walker etc.

i found that more of the Jefferson Parish, Chalmette, west bank, etc kids were pretty die hard LSU fans.

It seems like a lot of the blue blood uptown, garden district, etc kids thought they were above LSU....so they went to such prestigious schools like Bama or Ole Miss. Bunch of little panty waists.

There is some of this. Kind of a Manning effect.

In the past this was definately true. It has slowly changed with the better academic requirements at LSU and of course TOPS has also been a big factor. When I graduated in 1983, we had like two people go to LSU out of a class of 83 people. Now I think like atleast 10-15% of people from my school go to LSU.

I also graduated from Shaw and agree with the in-state comment. I believe I am probably older than you and things have changed. When I graduated in '77 most of those who went on to college went to LSU (though not by a large percentage) and most of the rest were divided among UNO, SELU, USL (no ULaLa back then) and a small minority went to Tulane. I had no desire to go to LSU even though my family was pretty big on LSU. I wanted out of state (CU Boulder) or Tulane but the family money wasn't there. I got almost full boat to LSU and changed my mind at the last minute. Glad I did....

woody, i'm way older than you (class of '69)....but agree with the rest of your comments...

now if i could have gotten into West Point, or a ROTC scholarship, i probably would have started out somehwere like the Citadel or VMI.....if my vision would have been good enough for a Navy ROTC scholarship I would have gone to Tulane in a heartbeat....

I remember looking at those class composites thinking how OLD those guys were. Now...

I had the chance to apply for an academy slot and thought "no way I am going into the military." Wound up getting an AF commission while at LSU and spending 9 years doing exactly what I thought I would NEVER do!

I started following LSU basketball just after Dale Brown retired. Not sure why because those were some mediocre/bad teams for a little while
