LSU baseball pitching coach Wes Johnson, who was hired on Monday, has signed a three-year term sheet worth $1.14 million.
LSU released Johnson's contract information to The Advertiser on Monday after a public records request. The term sheet has a $380,000 yearly base salary and runs through June 30, 2025. He also receives an $800 per month vehicle allowance and a $25,000 relocation incentive.
Johnson left his position as the Minnesota Twins pitching coach to come to Baton Rouge. The Athletic reported on Sunday that Johnson was making $350,000 per year with the organization.
University documents obtained by The Advertiser show that LSU's last pitching coach, Jason Kelly, signed a three-year, $900,000 term sheet. Kelly left LSU after he was hired as Washington's new coach.
Johnson was in the midst of his fourth season with the Twins before leaving for LSU. Minnesota has the 11th best ERA in MLB and is in first place in the American League Central.
"We have hired, in my opinion, the best pitching coach in the country at any level," LSU coach Jay Johnson said in a school release Monday. "The success he has had at the highest level of baseball speaks to Wes’ ability to communicate, teach, develop and motivate."
Prior to his time in MLB, Johnson was the pitching coach at Arkansas for two seasons and at Mississippi State for a year.

That's probably just the part the state needed to approve.

Lol, at all other blow-hards saying we doubled his salary.
In the day and age of NIL that made no sense. LSU has to keep up with pay for play on all sports. That much money would have be asinine.

Lol at not understanding how college coaches have their salaries/compensation set up

Once again it shows that people on this site don’t know shite haha. Claiming he’s getting 700k. Idiots haha

Ive read nothing but, "Wes Johnson abruptly leaves The Twins for massive pay raise" citing a $750,000 salary.
There's been alot of articles written recently with completely false information coming from "sources" especially in this NIL era.

That's base salary. Doesn't mean that's all he's going to make. I can almost guarantee it's not all he's going to make.

I'm not surprised, after your first comment, that you said this but it's even dumber than your original statement. LSU isn't paying NIL deals bozo. Coaches money and NIL money isn't coming from the same place.

There is somebody here who doesn't know Jack shite, but I don't think it is who you think it is.
You really think he left the MLB for basically the same amount of money?

Or that the $700k number originated on this site?

You think Kendall Rogers got it from Tigerdroppings?
700k may not be accurate, but a base of 380k probably isn't close to all he will make either.

That's what I'm saying. He was calling out this board like the info came from here rather than was brought here. From KR and a variety of MLB writers.

I thought KR said it was closer to $500k

Well just from what is in that article, the compensation creeps up to $414,600 (in year 1) when you factor in the moving allowance and monthly vehicle allowance.

Get back to me when you can show me a total compensation package that equals $700k.
Also, Louisiana just changed it's NIL laws permitting the university to be involved in transactions.

Kyle Boddy and the Twins’ Athletic beat writers both said 700k+. They have no reason to lie.
This is a sport that only allows a school to have what, 2 or 3 paid assistants? Big time baseball schools have been creative with income for a long time.

I am sure the summer kids camps supplement the coaches salaries. So much so Skip kept part of it for 2 years after he retired.

Ya but they usually funnel the camp money to the unpaid assistants, I thought.
Gleeman (twins well respected beat writer) said this morning in an athletic article that it was for $750k annual.
I don’t see how he gets close to that if his base is $350k

Kyle Boddy said "sources tell me" his salary will be doubled at LSU. He's not lying either way.
ETA: And then The Athletic said $750k "sources confirmed".

Yep there is camp money etc. that isn’t part of the main compensation.

@DanHayesMLB
Wes Johnson said this was a family decision. More time at home. Cited his 12-year-old daughter and wanting to be around.
This would qualify as a slight pay cut, and definitely not the $750,000 we initially heard. Also makes sense why he never asked #MNTwins for more.

Term sheet for new #LSU pitching coach Wes Johnson says he signed a three-year deal paying him $380K per year, plus postseason incentives.
Sources told
@DanHayesMLB
he was making about $400K with the Twins.
