I know nobody will think about it right off the bat, but man this really screws over walk ons getting scholarships like they have been recently, since those dont count as initial counters. Why give out scholarships to walk ons any more when you can just hit the portal and find someone with no initial counter limit. Obviously some good walk ons will still get schollies, but a whole lot less of them will now

I thought about this at first too, but it should be marginal since teams were only giving them to walk-on players with 1 year left, they always want them back open for a fall freshman enrollee. Anything longer than that was going to players that performed so well, they would still get one under the new rules.

Not sure how this is good for anyone but Alabama.

I can see if they let you add a scholarship player for each transfer out, but there are teams in the SEC that will benefit more from this than LSU, who actually needs the increase because of attrition.

I guess at the end of the day, get the best players you can get and coach them up. Can’t control what the players you can’t get go.

So a player gets an NIL deal, gets processed, then what?

Alabama has been playing by their own rules for like 10 years in regards to recruiting.

This just levels the playing field and makes all those grey shirts and "medical" retirements go to shite.

Recruiting more than 25 is now fair game for everyone and not just bama.

Bama processes the busts and signs 50 players each year.

This would catch up to anyone in reputation. Their processing is overblown.

And everybody else who can afford unlimited scholarships. I’m not sure the motivation of this rule, but like NIL, it’s just gonna further separate the haves from the have nots. It may seem like a good idea on the surface, but it’s gonna further hurt college football. There will only be like 10 schools who will ever be able to win an NC.

This will backfire too...

*The rich will get richer

*More corruption and more kids getting buried on depth charts. Over-signing will result to more kids entering an already crowded Transfer Portal.

I can see all of the haves signing large classes and using collectives to pay for those over the 85 man limit. They'll use it like BYU did last year and have 110 guys on "scholarship".

So Alabama will now sign all of the top 100 players

I think 100 is still more than 85. WHich is the roster limit for scholarship players.

LSU can use this the same way people think Alabama will. Don’t know how you think this will only benefit them. This will help any top 10 power that wants to process players and then just stack incoming recruits.

And other schools will do this as well. This is the basic concept that the NFL has. The difference is that an NFL roster is limited to 53 active players plus the practice squad and college football has 85 schollies plus walk-ons.
Now with NIL $$$$s, walk-ons have more benefits and can be on the team, play and not count against the 85 scholarships. In effect, the rich will get richer.

Bama will sign 35 every year and cut who they don’t want every year to stay under 85.

Just one of those unintended consequences these kids got when they wanted to be paid.

Welcome to the real world.
