My Spring Game Thoughts

1. First of all, I was extremely impressed with Jennings. He has a very quick release and also obviously has some wheels. I could tell he wants to throw first and runs when necessary. He doesn't spook easily into taking off. Very excited for this kids future ad expect him to take the reigns come 2014.
2. Mettenberger was..interesting. I remember one of the first plays, he went through his progressions beautifully to find his 3rd read in Beckham for a 20-30 something yard gain in a pretty tight window. There were a couple other throws that really showed off his arm talent and ball placement. That was very impressive. He also seemed to have quite a bit more pocket presence than last year. However, he still had a couple what-was-that throws. He missed Landry for what should have been a 40+ yard TD and a few others were off target as well. Then he comes right back and slings it to Beckham for an almost 80 yard TD. I can tell its clicking, but he seems inconsistent. When he's on, he can do great things. But when he's off, well he's just alright.
3. Hill will emerge as a star this year. He ran with authority today. He bounced many of his runs to the outside, which did help gain yards, but if he continues to do that he might be dancing for losses against better teams. This guy can easily have a 1000+ yard season. Perfect blend of speed and power.
4. Anthony Johnson and Ego Ferguson were also pretty impressive. Johnson especially was blowing right through the line on many occasions. Ego was also in on quite a few stuffed plays up the middle.
5. I noticed 65 (Gerald Hawkins i believe) was playing RT. I guess he passed up Alexander on the depth chart?
6. Seemed like there quite a few false starts and offensive penalties. Hopefully that can get cleaned up.
7. I was impressed with Beckham and Landry. They made some pretty impressive catches and runs all day.

That's all pretty much what I got from the game as well. Kicking game also left A LOT to be desired.

Ah that was what Inwas forgetting. What the hell was up with the FG kicking? That was pretty scary.

I didn't get a chance too go today, had to work
....who do you think has the edge based on what you seen today for the back up QB spot?

Posted on 4/20/13 at 5:32 pm to Brettesaurus Rex
I find it most interesting that you reviewed Jennings first over Mett.

probably looks like
Mett
Rivers
Jennings
Bolden
Rettig
Kragthrope
Jennings will play a lot in a wild cat type formation

Hill only RB that really impressed.
All three qb's look good. Rivers looked good but had a couple so so throws. Mett looked shaky at first with two passes that were just off the mark and another that was incomplete because the WR fell down on his cut. The incompletes early look to be over thrown by like 6 inches but I feel like it was really on the WR for not putting on more speed early in the throw.
AJ looked good, but actually could have run for a first that he chose not to and ended up not picking it up. Fears of him having run first thoughts were not justified for sure.
Holmes looked good at CB!

My thoughts:
1. Loston is gonna be the player we all hoped he would be this year. Was very dominant in the secondary
2. Rivers made some of the most impressive throws of the night. He also made some of the worst throws I have ever seen. There will be an interesting QB battle next year with Jennings in the lead.
3. Mett has improved overall just needs to work on getting the ball out of his hands quicker.
4. Landry and Odell looked beastly. They will be a force to be reckoned with this year.
5. Play calling is much improved. I know we held a lot back but it doesn't look like we are shoving a square peg in a round hole anymore.
6. The field is in the best condition I have ever seen it. They upgraded all the signs inside TS
7. Our biggest weakness is depth but I think that will be fixed with all the talent coming in this summer.

Only did that because Jennings saw the field first.
I didn't review Rivers Bc I wasn't able to stay through the second half Bc the little one was fussy. But on the way home I did listen in the radio. Rivers did seen like he made some nice passes. I hope he gets his chance as well because this is his second year in the program. But to me, Jennings looks like he has he potential to be special. He still has work to do as well, but still.

whats up with justin maclin? On the team still? Injured? saw him in the stands

- The first quarter, Mett looked like shite with overthrows, under throws, low throws, behind the receiver throws....He was all over the place. Then he came roaring back with one big completion after another. Overall, he looked great and definitely solidified the fact that he is the starter.
- Conversely, Jennings looked like the second coming in the first quarter, and threw some of the prettiest balls I've ever seen a QB throw. Almost all were on point and in a position for the WR to catch it. He looked fluid when he had to scramble and knew how to get the ball in tight spaces. In the second quarter though, the defense turned up the heat with blitzes and made Jennings look human.
- Rivers was all over the place. As Big Lake said, the guy would blow an easy pass and then come back and make a very nice, big time throw. As inconsistent as he was, I think he showed that Jennings is going to have to fight for that backup spot.
- Hill, Landry, and Beckham were the most dominant players on the field. Landry looked like Jerry Rice, Beckham looked like DeSean Jackson.
Landry in particular caught EVERYTHING no matter where it was placed. Hill ran for 10 yards a carry almost at will. Magee also looked serviceable out there and had a pretty nice 50 yard (or so) run.
- Loston looked like the 5 star safety he was coming out of HS. He was in or near every pass or tackle it seemed.
- If Kwon Alexander doesn't start, I'll be at a total loss. He, like Loston, was in on every play and stoned Jeremy Hill in the backfield on one run in particular.
- Rettig and Kragthorpe
- Kicking
