Yeah, I know. Everyone fears the crazy, wild-eyed sports dad and tries to warn against it. I'm not like that. When I was a kid, I only played pick-up sports with kids in the neighborhood. My dad was disabled and couldn't do much with me and I would have loved for him too. We watched the Saints and LSU all the time, though. As long as he enjoys it, we'll play. When he doesn't, it's over.

I'm sure that I'll get the usual flames and negative comments for posting this, but I was just about to shut it down for the day and thought about how excited I was to go home and play football with my son. He loves LSU and is looking forward to the season, so it'll be fun to have him watch Scott, Williams, Murphy, and Holliday and help him learn from them. I'm excited about the season too, but this reminds me of how this time of year felt when I was a kid, too.

Plus, I wanted to brag on him a bit!

don't let anybody tell you any different...these are the Golden years. Good story...good luck.

Thats great! Cant wait to do the same!! Can I ask why would you want him to play flag football instead of real football? I coached little league for years and dont understand that.

I know he is a little late starting but he would catch up and in the end would learn so much more.

About a year ago I made a post about a little kid who will someday be an LSU player. Not my kid. His parents are big. Here's an update. The kid is 5-3, 110. He's lighting em up in youth tackle football. He's 9 years old. Will give another update next year.

Thought we might try the real thing next year. I just thought he'd have more fun with the older kids this way. It is about him having fun.

Spending time with your son should never draw flames or negative comments. It's great to hear. Enjoy him while he's still young...they grow up way too fast.

I was excited to watch my son play quarterback on his pee wee team last year. He took a good lick and now he doesn't want to play anymore. So just watch it. Yea, He was the fastest on the team also. He is still fast and he just wants to run track now.

make your sons play football until they get cut from a team and then make them try out the next year. it is the greatest game in the world and i dont care what anyone says MAKE them play. dont baby them it will make them better in the end.

I really enjoyed coaching my son in youth football for 6 years. We really had some great times and now I have "retired" and am getting to be just a "fan" of his. He is working hard to become the starting QB of his middle school team and I am cheering him on. Either way, I am very proud the work ethic he has shown in trying to beat out several older kids for the QB position.

cool story man. My son also just started playing this year. He is 9 and is playing tackle. I can totally understand the excitement part. We throw the ball a lot and just talk in the afternoons he doesn't have practice, work on a few technique things but nothing to much. I had a dad that pushed me pretty hard and I want to teach him but at a easy pace.

At this age it is hard to find something we both get into besides LSU, so i guess football is the mutual interest lol.

FWIW he is a scrawny thing but is planting kids in practice. All the other parents seem to be put off a bit that he hits hard... oh well lol.

Great story and you sound pretty level-headed which is really hard for a lot of dads to be. I love watching my boys play sports. It's a great way for families to spend time together and it's good for the kids in so many ways.

Enjoy watching your son. There's nothing wrong with experiencing it all through his eyes. Heck, I went outside and sword fought with my seven year old yesterday in the front yard. Wonder what the neighbors thought about a, ahem, thirty-seven year old woman beating down her son with a stryrofoam sword? Yeah, I don't let them "fake" win. They gotta earn it.

But we had a blast.

thats awesome! just dont be his coach. i was the best athlete on the team and since my dad didnt wanna play favorites, i had to play blocking back instead of qb and HB. yet he use to be proud as hell when i rolled guys over twice my size. the fall is the greatest! without a doubt!

AlaTiger, I love it. We all need to remember that feeling. Hope he does great. Enjoy every moment. As an old fart, I gotta tell you, it really does go by faster than you can imagine.

Correct you are. As long as they're good kids and make the grades, they'll be fine.

Gay. WRONG. Full pads and tackle or don't do it at all. Pfffffffffffffttttttttttttt.

j/k....enjoy...but don't mistake the diff between what it takes to play flag ball and real full pads tackle ball......
