She didn't even take the LaTech job that she was being primed for over the course of several years. Not to mention it was her alma mater and it was an elite program she was taking over.

She didn't take it because their offer was a ridiculous slap in the face. Tech fricked up bad with that move.

This is true, if Tech would have offered her 5 years, she would have stayed

It's ridiculous that we'd waste that money on a sport that generates next to zero revenue while our mens program continues to suffocate to death.

I'm all for LSU women's basketball being good, but IMO there is no reason to hire a "big name" women's coach and spend a lot of money. our women's program can do just fine hiring a young cheap coach. No reason to spend a lot of money on a woman's coach and be strapped to keep a football coordinator in the future because of a million dollar buyout for example.

That's like a blind person spending $50,000 on a new car

Jimmy Ott just reported storyt starting to gain steam.. her party initiated contact. Salary came up and question regarding her potential salary if hired.. Supposedly Alleva's response was 'Well, we payed the last coach $700,000 to play golf

I just don't get it... If there was potential to fill up our arena for Women's basketball (and create some revenue), then I'd say, "sure, go ahead, spend some money and get a winner."

But if we didn't pack the arena with 5 straight final four appearances, we are NEVER going to pack the arena for women's basketball like Tenn or Uconn.

This is Alleva's job, and he gets to make the final call, but I just don't understand spending $1m for a women's basketball coach at LSU.

Don't forget in all this that it's good business for a coach to at least listen to other schools... helps negotiating a higher salary at the current school.

Just because Mulkey is talking with LSU people doesn't mean she has any interest in actually taking the job.

That is very true. Very smart play by her people, but we will see what happens. I should get some new info on this later in the day. I'll be happy to share.

King Joey said it best in his response in another thread........

Butts in the seats is not the only measure of value from a successful program. Our football program brings in much more revenue than ticket prices x 92,500 x # of home games, and has value beyond even the revenue it brings in. I don't believe there's a ledger entry for exposure and image (though I guess "goodwill" might approximate it). Having a successful womens basketball team adds value through increased attendance, but would also add value in less tangible ways that are still (imo) important. I really like the image LSU has (or has had) of excelling or trying to excel at pretty much everything (football, baseball, basketball (once upon a time), womens basketball (recently), track & field, softball, volleyball, soccer, etc.). I'm a fan of LSU sports and believe there is value in success at any sport in which we compete. The athletic department has the money, and I believe another successful athletic program at LSU is worth more than a couple of more TAF banquets or another new set of dumbbells for the auxillary practice facility weightroom. No need to go crazy with it, but no need to cheapskate it either.

A sport doesn't need to pack an arena to have value for the university. Neither women's or men's basketball is ever going to pack the arena here whether we have final four teams or not. The fact is, LSU brings in over $110 million dollars in revenues. If paying a coach $700K/year is somehow going to effect football's ability to hire an assistant, then somebody is doctoring the numbers. Women's basketball in now way "takes away" from any other sports anymore than men's basketball, tennis, swimming etc.

The bottom line, Alleva even said in his press conference he's going to pay MARKET VALUE for a top coach. You're not getting ANY top coaches in here without a package totaling at least $700K/year. You might get a young up and comer for less, but not someone the caliber of Mulkey or Jeff Walz at Louisville.

Imo this could be the very best hire LSU could possibly make. She would probably bring Barmore with her. You wouldn't need Starkey. The program needs a new direction.

But it is hard for me to believe LSU will get this lucky all things considered.

Okay, I can feel you on that. It's your opinion.

The only thing is, its not you or my $1 million to "waste"......................it's LSU's athletic department's million to waste. So, it probably matters little what we think in the end. I think they should pay at least $700K, and you don't. But they're probably not gonna call and consult with either of us. It's fun to debate it though.

portions of my "donations" may actually go toward paying this particular head coach, therefore it would be technically part of mine to waste or not to waste.

Im sure I could make a call, like any of us, and state that I will pull donations if something is done that I don't agree with but like you, I would think no one at LSU would care. Not that I would go that far anyway.

But I really dislike that whole "it's not your money" bs argument. If I donate 10 cents than through 18 degrees of separation it kinda is "my money"

Barmore is not coming to LSU.
Nor is Mulkey, IMO.
Mulkey is in a great position to win a couple of National Championships over the next two yrs or so and build a Nat'l Program. She's bullet proof at Baylor and has built a great foundation.
Why would she leave that to go to LSU?
