Are we really comparing a women's soccer goalie to college football players.?

the question is why so many think she may kick off in an actual game. Every team has a walk on kicker or 2 that will never see the field, just like every other walk on on the team that will never play, this kicker is there to provide a leg in practice.

She's 6'1", 190 lbs. She's been lifting with the football team for the better part of a year. The football players know and respect her as an athlete and a competitor.

I realize it's not comparable to football, but as a four-year, starting goalie in the SEC, it's safe to say she's made hard contact in the penalty box. In fact, I'd argue she's made more hard contact in game conditions than either of the other two kickers. And yes, before you jump on me, I know soccer is not football. Still, it is worth considering. My sister was a soccer player at LSU, and she had the bruises, and the broken bones, to prove it. Believe me, it's a contact sport.

Also, for comparison:

Mo Isom: 6'1", 190 lbs.
Drew Alleman: 5'11", 183 lbs.
James Hairston: 6'0", 200 lbs.

Honestly, I'd be just as comfortable with Isom as the defender of last resort on a kickoff as with Alleman or Hairston. And before you jump on me, internet, I know that Isom, as a woman, does not have same upper body strength as a man of comparable size. However, I've never seen a male kicker make a tackle using his upper body. Also, I'd be willing to bet that Isom can squat the same weight, or more, as the other two kickers.

Bottom line: I'd like to see Isom on the roster. Not because of chivalry, or publicity, or equality, but because she adds value.

1. If she can consistently make field goals of 50+ yards, which seems to be the case, keep her. It's never a bad idea to have more than one kicker on the roster with this ability.
2. Our kick-off game can only improve from last year. Were none of you frustrated by that phase of our special teams play last year? Or have you forgotten? I don't think any of our kickers could put the ball consistently inside the five. If she can consistently put the kick-off inside the five, with acceptable hang-time, keep her.

That's my two cents... I await thoughtful replies.

Great post. Most informative assessment I've seen yet.

I'm not very well versed on the eligibility rules of collegiate athletics. Since you took the time to research the topic, I have a couple of questions regarding her eligibility that you might be able to answer:

1) Does the fact that she has already played 4 years of soccer at LSU affect her eligibility to play another sport (football) at the collegiate level?

2) Is she considered a 5th year senior utilizing her last year of eligibility or is she a freshman with 4 years to play?

Thanks

nice..!!

I love the people that tr yand say women are equal to men.! and before all the women rights activist show up, i'm talking about physically..!!
She doesn't belong on the football field, kicker or linebacker, it doesn't matter. There is a reason for men's and women's sports.

By switching sports she gains a year of eligibility even after her 4.

In the end, if I can use a female kicker to my advantage, even if just to demoralize or frustrate the other team, I see a value in that....in addition to needing her talents (if I need them). There's more to the dynamic than most see here. As far as what she brings to the team: that's up to her...she will either fail or pass. No other way.

I think its ok maybe 20 years ago I would have cared more. I feel everyone involved knows she wont play, it is just to risky for injury.
I can see her kicking for the spring game maybe dress for some home games.
But but if she was kicking the ball to the bleachers every kick and that there would be no chance of returns ever, then maybe she would play. Ah, I just don't see it.

Fairly accurate, women can possess similar lower body strength to men so similar size, upper body, no way. She survived a high impact car crash with severe injuries, she has a better idea than most what being laid out @ full speed can do to one's body.

I never heard of a Homecoming Queen weighing in at 190 pounds, I don't care if she's 6'5.

Great. Use this to your advantage. Kinda like golf...it is often easier to hit the wedge full than with something less than a full swing.

So devise play/situations were you have a want to kick the ball high and within a limited max distance. Perhaps to better cover a return or in the situation where the kickoff is on a short field due to penalty

She can kick very well. Not too bad on field goals either... I would have no problem with her making the team, that doesnt mean she would ever see the field. If she DID get on the field, and it WAS to kickoff, I would worry about her getting lit up by someone on the return team.

I am not sure whether she is really trying to make the team to contribute or as a publicity stunt, but I think that we have to accept that if we were in her position, and thought we had skills to contribute to the team, we would try out too. Saying that she should not try because of the negative impact it would have on the team is to lie to ourselves.

Seriously, if you had the chance to try out just to dress out one time and walk out on to the field on a Saturday night, wouldn't you take that shot? Why should we bash her for something we would do if we were in her position.

...and if you question her leg, check out the "Mo Versus" segment with Brad Wing.

she might make the team, but she'll never see the field unless both alleman and hairston get hurt (hairston kicked FG in high school)
