Here is a rough breakdown of voter location by conference. Rough in the sense that some arbitrary assignments had to be made where conferences intersect.

ACC: 8
Big 12: 10
Big East: 5
Big Ten: 13
National: 4
PAC 10: 7
SEC: 12
West: 6

This is from last year, so it could have changed slightly. The west are voters in non-PAC 10 states.

I'm not sure if this is directed at me or not. However, I completely agree that regional bias' exist. The west in general (with USC being the exception) also suffers from the bias you suggest that the south endures (with Alabama being the exception in the South).

The SEC as whole, on the other hand, has been getting a tremendous amount of respect over the past couple of years - which it should.

Texas and the big 3 Florida schools also don't seem to have the same exposure/bias issues as other southern or western schools do.

1. Since 2002 there have been only 3 different teams ranked number 1 in the preseason. Those teams are USC, OK, and Ohio State. These three teams have combined for 10 wins and 8 losses in bowl games in the last 6 years.

No. Those teams have played (and this is off the top of my head) in many BCS Championship games...USC (2), Oklahoma (3), Ohio State (3). So I see absolutely no bias.

quote:

2. USC has been a preseason number 1 in either the coaches Poll or AP Poll 4 of the last 6 years. Despite those rankings USC can lay claim to 1 BCS Title.

Again, no bias. USC has dominated the recruiting rankings and should justifiably be one of the top teams in the country. Same goes for LSU, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.

quote:

3. There has been only 1 instance where the preseason #1 ranked team ended the year #1, and that year was 2004 when USC defeated OK. We don't really know how good USC was because they didn't play the best team...Auburn.

I don't see a bias. What I do see is that it is quite difficult to predict the season. You actually make that point with Auburn. They were thought of so lowly to start the season that an undefeated run couldn't get them to the big game. Unfair for sure but I wouldn't chalk it to bias but instead to bad prognosticating.

quote:

5. Since 2002 only 1 team has 2 BCS National Championships...LSU, and their highest ranking to begin a season in the last...Oh I don't know...forever was number 2 last year.

I might agree with you slightly but considering #2 is super high, I am not sure we have been disrespected. I would think that at least once we would have been #1. But that isn't what REALLY matters. I will give you a maybe on this one.

quote:

6. Since 2002, only 1 Pac 10 team, other than USC has been to a BCS bowl. That was Washington State, and they got trounced by OK.

I think USC is the only team to regularly be highly ranked from the Pac 10 so I don't see a bias. Once in a while you will get another that lasts a few weeks there but that is about it.

quote:

8. Ohio State is 0-9 against the SEC.

They are our bitches. But again, they kick everyone else's arse so where is the bias?

I hope your more to come will enlighten me. You are giving out lots of stats but making no connection whatsoever to a bias. I will have to check it out later as I have to run...

Even the author of this thread (inebr8ted tiger)
is bias towards USC.

It wasn't personal. It was directed generally at the argument.

I agree it has gotten better since UF and LSU won the NC, but before that it was horrific.

FWIW, that's pretty good since bowls are supposed to match teams similar in talent.

Auburn being the best team in 2004 is an opinion.

LSU's Overatedness/Underratedness Since 2002
Season Preseason AP Rank Final AP Rank +/-
2002 14 Unranked -12
2003 14 2 +12
2004 4 16 -12
2005 5 6 -1
2006 8 3 +5
2007 2 1 +1

Total: -7

Overall, LSU has been overrated by a total of 7 places over the span 2002 to 2007 based on preseason AP rankings versus final AP rankings.

MOST excellent post my friend, great job. LSU has more wins than USC this decade overall other than that, great job and very true.

Didn't SC lose two games, in the Pac 10, just last year? And the year before that?

I was referring to their bowl record. It's the best place to see how teams fair against out of conference teams.

No PAC-10 team besides USC has been ranked in the top 8 in the preseason AP Poll since 2002 either.

Your making my point for me...

My point is that USC year in and year out is ranked so highly because they play a soft schedule. With the exception of Ohio State this year, no team on USC's schedule should even be on the same field.

I made the point about the other teams and their records in Bowl games to show how they fair against OOC teams. Aside from USC and Cal, who is 4-1 in bowl games, the PAC 10 is terrible in bowl games. That is if they make a bowl game.

USC is 5-1 in BCS bowls (their 5 wins weren't even close and the loss was in an all-time classic game). How does that record reconcile with your overrated/media bias claim?
