McMahon isn’t doing some hidden playbook. It is still early, and there is no rhyme or reason to McMahon…

But if Nwoko doesn’t start playing 25+ minutes and Tamba doesn’t start seeing his minutes cede to Miller/Reed our ceiling limited. And if MacKinnon continues to see the 3rd most minutes we might be screwed.

I have always been super positive about the outlook of the program. Not to be a douche (idc the random downvotes I get on every post), but I worked for LSU basketball, I have coached HS basketball for a decade…you can see the talent in some guys and not in the others. I get intangibles and playing smart….but that gets you only so far and it shouldn’t make up 40% of your starters.

Nwoko should legit be averaging 28 and 16 at this point of the season because he is a man amongst boys, but he is not even averaging playing HALF the game . I’m praying when we play closer and tougher games the minutes change. Unfortunately I think MacKinnon is viewed as one of our elite players.

Edit: As soon as I clicked send I checked again and we’re back up to #38

The offense jumped up 7 spots to 30. However, the defense dropped from 57 to 70. The imbalance is getting wider. That’s not necessarily a great sign as it limits your paths to victory.

LSUbutt — you make good points. I’m just wondering if we are seeing so much of Mackinnon because CMM wants to see what’s he got with him.

But if the shots don’t start falling, and by game six or seven he’s still getting that much PT, then I stand corrected.

It’s the one real puzzler with CMM every year — the rotations.

Judging by his past, he falls in love with guys “he trusts” and ignores all other signs. I look at all these other teams and they play 8 guys with maybe 1 other dude. We are splitting equal minutes for the bigs spots when we have 1 dominant player and 1 dude who is meaningless. It will hinder us

A big reason for that is he often gets in foul trouble. It’s what limited his minutes at MSU. He has the highest foul % of any of the major contributors, by a decent margin

MacKinnon is a big disappointment from a decision making standpoint. That guy is too old to be doing things like overdribbling and making aimless moves when he gets guys off balance. These are correctable things he should know by now and coaches should’ve drilled into him by now. I don’t see us having a viable replacement. King would be the next up but he also makes a lot of poor decisions and has a lot of messy play with the ball. Max needs play cleaner period.

With his athleticism and skill set, I’d say the guy should never take more than 4 dribbles. Shoot, look to pass, finish on a cut to the rim. If we get to conference play and all the guards and wings are just dribbling on the perimeter again I’ll have to bust out my McMahon voodoo doll.

Mackinnon is in shell shock mode. He is stronger than he’s playing, smart enough to play guard. Try off the bench with Reece and Reed. He’s being played tight on the perimeter because there’s no reason not to.

Thomas has had to play a different game since tartleton.

Reece will have to come in early soon, with Thomas.

Sutton has to play more wing with Nwoko and Reed or Tamba or miller. Has to.

Well we've never been a remotely good defensive team under CMM.... And this doesn't seem like the team to change that.

Atleast Sutton, Dedan and Nwoko are all playing well.

Last year LSU was ok (not great) defensively. Certainly the best they've been under McMahon, but a pretty significant margin. A lot of that was due to the shot blocking/rim protection Chest and Collins provided. This team doesn't look to have much rim protection, and they aren't forcing turnovers. MM's teams have just never played with a ton of consistent intensity on the defensive end.

The problem is that that got McMahon far at Murray State, and he still has yet to figure out that the SEC is a different animal

It’s mostly when he’ll get a guy to run at him because of his ability to shoot it from 3. He’ll get by the defender and that’s when he’ll be indecisive, over dribble or take an awkward shot. At his age he should know exactly what his #2 move should be when guys run at him on the perimeter or what 2nd spot he’s trying to get to.

Exactly which is why we’ve always had a problem giving up offensive rebounds under MM. it’s not for lack of size or athleticism inside, it’s because we’re out of position on D too many times when the shot goes up.
