He showed some really encouraging flashes out in Maui, and his switching capabilities are important. Also showed he can crash the board and be a threat on rim runs and putbacks. I'm trying to think of similar raw/upside guys that have come through or a guy he reminds me of.

A heavier version of Chris Johnson? He was raw as hell, but developed into a fringe NBA guy

Yea i thought about CJ. He was actually pretty skilled offensively, just didn't really have a position. Was fun watching him and Randolph swat at everything in Brady's last year.

Tyrus Thomas was pretty raw, but once he went through that growth spurt he adapted pretty quickly.

Jose Vargas

ETA:

This highly entertaining article (when SI was still reputable), will give you young ones not old enough to remember the dark knight, insight into the enigma that was Vargas.

I miss Chris Johnson. I loved that team we had in Trent Johnsons first year. We got screwed in seeding and had to play eventual champion North Carolina in the second round and gave them a good test.

Bo Spencer
Marcus Thornton
G Temple
Taz
CJ

Was the last really good team we've had imo.

Glover Jackson!! I’ll never understand why he didn’t get playing time. Brown I started him against North Carolina in a loss one year and he had a 6-8 minute span that was unreal. I think his line was something like 10-6 and 3 or 4 blocks in that short span. He was 6-10 with a 40+ inch vert and we had nothing inside on that team.

We won the SEC at 13-3 with a 27-8 record and we got a damn 8 seed against a good Butler team that I think went to the final four the year after IIRC.

We got screwed that year. We should have been a 5 or 6 seed honestly. But to win the SEC and they throw us in the #1 teams bracket to play them next. It was disrespectful.

Jose Vargas without question.

Never forget when CBS had the camera in the huddle at the end of the game vs. Georgetown. Dale was trying to set up the winning shot for John Williams. He looked at Jose and said, "Jose, don't shoot the ball."

Jose shot the ball. Tigers lost.

Good times.
