Same criticism of JB coming out of HS.
Max has the intangibles JB does. I don't know if he has that kind of ceiling, but he's showing the same moxie that Burrow showed in 2018.

When given time, no empty backfield, he appears very much in control and poised in the pocket...he throws an easy ball to catch...a la Ken Stabler.

His arm strength will improve and a QB that has timing and accuracy can make up for the lack of a cannon. Give him an actual offseason in the S&C program and he'll get more zip.
I was more impressed with his ability to navigate the pocket and handle pressure. He actually looked more comfortable than Brennan. I can't remember what one of the announcers said, something like "easy feet". That's hard to teach and more of an innate ability.
I don't think he's the next Burrow, but he looked really good as a true Fr. With the weapons we had last year and if he was a 5th year grad player, who knows how good he would be?

The jump that burrow made from 2018 to 2019 is one that I’ve never seen any QB make. Remains to be seen if Max can match that.
Burrow's talent was already there. The improvement from 2018-19 was being put into the right scheme.

He doesn't need to be the next Joe Burrow or even try to be. He needs to be the best Max Johnson he can be. That'll do just fine.

I knew MJ would be great when I saw videos of him practicing with guys in a field on campus earlier in the year. Let's pause on the Burrow comparisons for a minute though.

He's a gym rat and a film study freak. Boutte said that he and Max ran routes all Summer, then after practice and days off in the Fall.
He pretty much knows what the D will be doing before the kickoff. And he gets rid of the ball lightening fast - that alone can account for the very few sacks he took.
I hope O listens to Max and his dad in the same way O listened to Joe and his dad as to the passing scheme for 2021 and beyond.
Max Jonson is the real deal.

Johnson also said the pass usually considered the best barometer of arm strength isn't used much. It's called the "deep out," where a receiver lines up wide, runs 15 to 20 yards upfield and cuts toward the sideline. Scouts place
such emphasis on the throw because NFL defensive backs are so much quicker than college players in breaking on the ball, creating a higher risk of interception.
"In this league, you can't name one team that throws 10 'outs' the whole year," Johnson said.

He does remind me of Joe with his pocket presence and ability to scramble for the first down. He made several very slick moves to avoid sacks the past 2 games. At risk of sounding cliche, he has "tremendous poise", something that TJ lacks.
Whether or not he will remind me of Joe in other ways remains to be seen. But what he did in the last 2 games as a true frosh is extremely impressive, regardless of context.

I agree. I see Max as a winner all the way! He will be in the Heisman talks in 2 years!

Working non stop with receivers was the biggest factor. Burrow was Doing great at the end of 2018. He just needed experience.

Except his trajectory started in that A&M loss and then the UCF game resembled what he did all of 2019. Brady etc made a huge impact with the scheme but burrow and the players played a bigger role.
