Despite his struggles on Saturday and not being placed in a position to succeed by the coaching staff Max Johnson showed that he has heart as UCLA tried their best to knock him out the game and he kept getting up time and time again. I believe that he will learn from his mistakes and be better for it moving forward.

It's not how many times you get knocked down but how many times you get back up.

I don’t think there’s a question he’s an ultimate competitor. He knows he needs to improve. He knows the entire team needs to improve. Bad thing is he can only control his abilities and the lacking of others may be more than he alone can overcome.

He may have heart, but he still has arm strength comparable to Danny Etling.

Funny you say that. His arm was stated as being adequate for all NFL throws in his draft profile. Arm strength was never a weak suit with Etling.

He does have heart and toughness, but his biggest strength was supposed to be his football intelligence. There were at least a couple of plays (especially the attempted backhand pass) that seem to call this into question. I can only hope that he plays smarter in the future and that the team improves.

I am hoping that many of the problems in week 1 were just due to poor preparation and that most will get ironed out soon. If not, 2021 is going to start to look a lot like 2020.

He reminds me so much of Etling and that's not a bad thing. Etling was tough as nails

I didn’t see anything wrong with the play calling…he has simply got to get more accurate at game speed. The receivers didn’t do him any favors either. Hopefully, he can get on the same page as his receivers over the next two games and come out slinging for the state game.

In the game of football it kinda is about how many times you get knocked down, though. You could tell he was tired of getting hit when he threw a behind the back pass like ive never seen before. He was on the ground and being pressured all night. He should have had better blocking, better awareness, wr running quicker routes, rbs should have helped blocking and ran out on quick routes or screen passes. It was a clusterfrick out there.

Chip Kelly kept saying that he was about the toughest QB he had seen with all the hits he kept taking and how he didn't flinch basically.

There were multiple times last game where Max Johnson's arm strength was lacking. Throws from the right hash to the left sideline took forever to get there. And downfield passes are underthrown. There was a pass to Jenkins on the left sideline where he had to sit and wait, which gave the DB enough time to break up the pass. A stronger throw makes it an easy catch.

It was on display again on the deep ball to Boutte that was broken up. Boutte had the defenders beat but had to slow up and turn around completely to try to make the catch. This allowed the defender to break it up. If the ball is either put 5 yards further or Max gets it there faster, it's a touchdown.

eta: I think the staff needs to stop trying to put him in a bubble and let him run some designed plays. I'm sure he doesn't want to be handcuffed because the staff is afraid to call QB runs. He's less likely to get hurt doing that, than by passing the ball 50+ times a game. His strengths are his running ability and quick short passes, not running a slow developing downfield passing attack.

He's definitely tough. They need to do a much better job of protecting him moving forward.

He’s a developing player who’s only starting because our starter got hurt. There’s so much he can’t do yet but a lot of our fans overhyped him all summer. Aside from the arm strength, he was very late on a lot of throws, he was inaccurate and he drifted out of the pocket but the biggest problem was that he couldn’t adjust protections or recognize pressures at all.

He throw backwards better than I’ve ever seen, and that’s a true statement…

Max didn't let anyone down, honestly. He did what he could, but you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shite -- which is what this coaching staff is.

I have a hard time pinning anything on the players now that we know the coaches, who are paid millions to set them up for success, clearly have no idea what they're doing.

He also does cool trick-shot throws during the game!

I never doubted his heart, effort, or desire. I did doubt his throwing ability based on last year. He has got to get more accurate with the ball and raise his completion percentage to 70% to be successful as the fans want him to be (including me). When you throw 3/4 of your plays you have to sustain drives with high completion rate. He also has to show he can rip it down the field.
