Matt Leinart comments on Miles today.
Posted by emanresu on 9/22/16 at 8:21 pm2669
For those that don't know, he co-hosts a daily college football radio program with Mark Packer on SiriusXM. He talked about why Miles is on the hot seat and Stoops isn't.
quote:
Question: Why aren’t Les Miles and Bob Stoops evaluated by the same standard? Why is Miles on the hot seat but Stoops is not?
Here’s the major difference between these two in my opinion. You look at Bob Stoops and over the course of his tenure he’s won 9 big 12 champs, he’s won a title, and been to the title game multiple times, and he gets blamed for losing the big games, but he continually wins 10-11 games, but here’s the biggest difference.
Bob Stoops last year made a change. He hires Lincoln Riley, he adapts to the changes in college football and understands that he needs to make a change offensively because this is the way college football is going, and this is the way our conference is going. And we saw the benefits of that change last year, when they made the run to the college football playoff. I thought Lincoln Riley did a great job with the offense and the run game and all those things.
With Les Miles, the difference is, is he’s stuck in slow motion, and it’s the same inept offense that we’ve seen for how many years now? And he hasn’t made the change, and he hasn’t got out of his own way and say “listen, there’s a problem here, you know, we can’t develop quarterbacks, our offense if awful every single year, and yet we still have first round wide receivers, and we still have NFL talent all across the board.” And that’s the frustrating thing with me is, LSU is so good talent wise on the roster, and this team is loaded, but yet they haven’t made the change to adapt to what college football is. He hasn’t said, “listen, I gotta go out there and change my offense.” And no disrespect to Cam Cameron, but there’s a reason why he’s been fired a couple of times, and there’s a reason why, for whatever reason, why in this offense they haven’t produced a quarterback who can play.
And that’s the difference for me. That’s why I separate those two, especially in the last 2 years, because Les Miles just can’t push his ego aside. I think Les Miles is a great coach, and obviously he’s won a lot of games, but you have got to make the changes necessary to see your team take that next step, and he has not done that to this point.
[co-host says that it seems miles is just being defiant] And that’s the thing, it’s just, “listen, you know what, I’m gonna be stubborn, I’m gonna do what I wanna do”, and that may be what ultimately gets him fired, and he’s a good coach and has been successful, but the expectation at LSU is that you must beat Alabama and compete for conference champs if you wanna be the coach there, and I don’t think he’s done the necessary things to take that next step.
* * *
With Les Miles, this game [Auburn] is about getting the season back on track, it’s getting the most out of your players, and again, the thing that just continues to befuddle me is, the fact that you’ve got some of the best talent in college football and you’re just not maximizing it.

Sounds familiar...

Matt Lienart commenting about developing a QB is kind of funny to me considering his own development... or lack thereof.
Last game felt like it was actually called by someone who knew offense (CC). Most of these talking heads probably looked at the score and not actual game film. I'm cautiously optimistic that Miles has tinkered with his last offensive play (wishful thinking).

National media is finally catching up to what LSU fans have been saying for years now. (Except the delusional pumpers).

Agree 100%
Stoops was willing to fire coaches and make actual change and it worked for them last season.. At least he put ego aside and tried.
I just can't stand how Miles will put his loyalty to certain coaches over his loyalty to what is best for this program. It's his right though as a HC to pick who he wants to work for him. I just don't think hiring good friends is a good idea. Like Arkansas' coach says, he doesn't hire friends because he may need to fire them.
It also starts to bother me how he doesn't want LSU to play Michigan if they don't have to.. Again, he puts other loyalties ahead of LSU IMO.. (I'm not really upset about this, just piling it on since Miles has turned me off lately)
I would rather a coach that's loyalty is doing what is best for LSU.. above any other pride.. and adapting as much for the good of the program.
I still think he should have fired Cam and gotten out the way completely.. and yes I know it hasn't mattered who the OC was under Miles.. he is very much involved.. but by firing him, as his buddy, it would have maybe shown he was ready to really shake things up.. and get out of the way.. but he retained him.. and we started off with the same ol same ol.
I still root for LSU to win, but Miles' stubbornness has really rubbed me the wrong way these past couple of seasons.. and how smug he was about the idea of any change.

Are you talking nfl or college?
In college he threw for more yards in 3 years than we have in like the past 6 or 7 years.
Just because he went to the NFL and blew his career banging hotties doesn't mean he wasn't developed at USC.

I hope you're joking. The guy didn't make it in the pros but his college career is nothing to shite on.
We would have a couple more championships with a qb like him
That's a fair take, though not very original. But he does concede Miles is/was a great coach. We just can't take seriously people who think he is retarded and has always sucked. It's fair to want some new blood, but to shite on everything he's done is--well....shitty.

I would say his collegiate development was decent.

Spot on

It was also quarterbacked by a guy that doesn't lock onto a receiver and force throws.
Having a QB that knows how to check down and find the open man looks like a totally different offense.
They aren't really calling different plays. Just running them effectively.
