Dotson and Green didn't really matter to me, but losing Gathers and Derenbecker in the span of a couple weeks really puts a damper on the current state of the program. This season will be very interesting.

Damn, I haven't read through the thread but has anyone mentioned where he may transfer?

He's not transferring, he's leaving LSU and basketball for a year. He may eventually transfer, but according to the article he is taking time off from basketball for personal matters.

A lot of speculation that he may have alcohol/drug problems (hasn't been substantiated though).

This sucks. I have been holding on to the belief that we would have an experienced group this season and even though we may not have the greatest talent, our teamwork and experience would pay off. I'm reading posts stating that we may have 4/5 new faces in the starting lineup. That doesn't sound like experience to me.

If this is true, then he's making a good decision for his future by focusing on obtaining some help.

"We don't have a huge crop of talent on our team though. These guys were pretty good compared to our other players. It definitely hurts losing Dotson, Derenbecker, and Green."

This is pretty much how I see it. It is not as if we lost all-Americans but I still see it as pretty significant given what little we have. And I think I saw Deenbecker as a better player than some on here. I expected him to start or play significant minutes next season and possibly develop into something more than a role player by jr/sr year. Again, not trying to make it sound like we lost a lottery pick, but he showed some ability to score and decent athleticism.

How will this be spun as part of "winning the right way" with the right kinds of recruits and whatnot?

After reading the tigerrag article where Derenbecker's father was interviewed, it doesn't seem like this is TJ's fault.

I agree, however, if he leaves any doubt this season than turnover and things of this nature will be factored into the ultimate decision. Dotson, Green, Derenbecker, losing a recruit that you have been on literally since the day after you accepted the job, etc. It just doesn't paint a picture of continuity.

I've actually already posted in this thread.

Losing a player isn't good, unless that player was a trouble-maker of some sort, so there is nothing positive here.

I will withhold comment on the Derenbecker situation until the whole story comes out. There is likely a very interesting story that goes along with it.

As far as the program goes, managing the roster is the coach's responsibility. There is nobody to blame except the head coach if there is not enough players/talent to field a quality team. A new coach should be given some leeway to build a team. I think I have been rather consistant in my posts that this year was the make or break year for Trent and he should be fired if his team didn't make some significant progress.

Joe should have the following on speed dial:

Shaka Smart (gonna have some big names after him)
Chris Mooney
Randy Bennett (another west coast guy?)
Gregg Marshall
Fran Dunphy (kinda old but always in the tournament....)
Chris Mack (probably in a better position now..)

not sure how I'd feel about some retreads like Tubby Smith or Billy Clyde but I'm pretty sure almost everyone on this list would get more from the team than Trent has. Hell, bring in Bruce for crying out loud

Rumors are flying around he is transferring to either Georgetown, Gonzaga, or Stanford.

If it does play out where LSU has to hire a basketball coach after this season, it will be very interesting to see how it plays out. Alleva spared no expense in making a big splash in the womens' game, and then took what I can only imagine to be a hefty pay raise in the meantime. He's got no room for error with this hire; the plan will have to be leakproof.

I don't think the news is going to get much better, I'm not sure we have much of a shot at Javon Felix. I really wish we would have made a change last year so we wouldn't be sifting through crumbs for recruits.

I go back and forth on this one.

You know he's going to bring excitement to the program, but will he bring trouble? Probably...

I think Bruce will have a cleaned up act. If he had the PMAC looking like Thompson-Boling Arena he could walk in kicking puppies for all I care.

Tiger Rag

In reading the comments from his father, it sounds to me like substance abuse or some kind of clinical depression. The way his father talks about a diagnosis and mental health, leads me to believe that is what is being discussed. If someone asked me if my son had a mental health issue, I would stop that rumor in it's tracks. He didn't do that, just saying he doesn't "believe" that's the problem.

quote:

“I don’t know how it’s all being presented,” John Derenbecker told Tiger Rag. “We don’t believe it’s an issue of mental health. There’s no diagnosis. It’s just basically he has to work on properly prioritizing his life to succeed as a student-athlete.”

Continuing on that thread, the player’s father reiterated that at the heart of these “personal matters” is the necessity for his 19-year-old son to continue to grow and develop off the court.

“It’s sad,” Derenbecker continued. “He’s enjoyed his time at LSU, and this is not something he’s relishing or looking forward to having to go through. But he understands why he’s having to bear it.”

John Derenbecker also said he felt as if the university and coaching staff did all they could to assist his son during his stay in Baton Rouge.

“Coach (Trent) Johnson and LSU as a whole gave Matt every opportunity to excel as a student-athlete, and my wife and I truly appreciate that.

“His teammates have been great. Since Matt has started discussing this with Coach Johnson, he has not had any real contact with them. But throughout the year, he really enjoyed the time he shared with his teammates.”

I agree with Bubba on this one. While I think in general he would be requarded as in the Trent supporter camp he has been consistent in saying if Trent does not make the improvement expected he should be fired.

I do feel that while Derenbecker is not a star but may develop into a good role player down the road losing him for whatever reason is a bad sign for the program. Again reguardless of the reason it is another chip in the Trent armor.

My concern is what does Alleva consider acceptable progress to keep Trent. I mean 5-11 in the SEC would be as many wins as the last two years combined and would be considered improvement but in my mind not nearly enough to justify keeping a coach after 4 full years in the program! I would think no matter what the bottomline would be at least 7-9 in the SEC regular season and at least one SEC tournament win .
