I don't know why everyone is so excited about a 21st round pick

It's kind of like African-Americans and OJ. We ain't really big fans of Mac, we just feel like we finally stuck it to the man!

He would have gone significantly higher than that if he hadn't been telling everyone before hand that he was set on going to LSU. Had Houston gotten Aiken to accept a deal for $5 Mil, they would have tried to use the savings to sign Marshall for $1.5 Mil, which is the same as they were offering their 5th round pick, Nix. That's proof enough that the Astros at least thought far more highly of Marshall than as just a "21st round pick".

The guy I feel the most bad for in all this is Jacob Nix. It seemed like he had sure thing deal for $1.5 Mil, but then it evaporated into thin air.

Aiken at least still had a reasonable choice in front of him. I think what the Astros did to him was unfair, but at the end of the day, $5 million bucks is every bit as life changing of an amount of money for an 18 year old kid as $6.5 million. I mean, good for him for not being bullied, but I wouldn't have felt bad for him if had signed it.

@JeffPassan: Scary Astros possibility: If Nix wins grievance to pay agreed-upon $1.5M, Houston 17% over bonus pool, would forfeit next two 1st-rd picks.

I want Close to be my advisor.

Why? We can give you terrible advice here and won't charge nearly as much out of your first bonus.

How do you know it was terrible advice?

Because there is a ton of risk involved for any high school pitcher to turn down 5 million dollars, and much more than that for one with a known UCL defect.

Has anyone ever turned that much down before? I know Cole turned down around 4.

Nix doesn't have much of a leg to stand on other than calling the Astros assholes.

There was no signed agreement. He can only argue verbal agreement. However, on top of that, his advisor is Close the same as Aiken, so he can't claim he did not know the two agreements were dependent on each other.

It won't hold up.

it's gonna be an even bigger mess if the NCAA rules Nix and/or Aiken ineligible for possible violations during their negotiations. Has there ever been a MLB team with this much egg on their face after the signing deadline?

So the MRI that revealed it was just an etch a sketch drawing by the Astros or something?
