Its still bad when a. 22nd round pick can be offered 2 mil without penalty. This system was supposed to prevent that stuff

Josh, I haven't been following this closely. What's an educated guess at our odds for getting Mac?

There's no way to put a percentage or odds on these kinda things (no matter what tad says), but I think it's more likely than not that he leaves.

Why though? Just preparing yourself in case he does? Nothing that has been reported over the last month has changed the situation for Mac. Aiken has never said he will sign for less than $6.5 and the Astros aren't even offering $5 anymore. Even if they do cave and offer $5, there's nothing that's been said that would lead one to believe Aiken will sign for that.

Aiken and his rep are saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with his arm. He was hitting 97 in his last start. They see that his slot value is $7.9 and probably figure that they are already doing Houston a favor by agreeing to $6.5.

ETA: I didn't even mention all the countless times Mac has said he isn't leaving because we all know that doesn't really mean anything. BUT he has said that numerous times and his twitter account profile even lists himself as an LSU Tiger.

It's my belief that the Astros hold the upper hand in the negotiations with Aiken. The Astros can come off that $6.5 all the way down to $5 and still likely have enough money to away Mac. JMO tho. Not based on trying to prepare myself for disappointment or anything.

Question is is Aiken willing to walk away with no money and take his chances with the draft next year or 3 years from now? We have no idea.

No worries

Wasn't trying to be a dick. I will just be surprised if Aiken agrees to sign for $5 million.

He's being offered 3.1 million. If he signs it will most likely be for less than 5 million, probably a lot less

If the Astros continue to sit on that $3.1 offer and never come off it, there's a real chance Aiken walks. If he doesn't walk at that number, Mac will potentially be able to sign for more money than both Aiken and Nix.

I agree 100%

I was just reading over at crawfish boxes just now and it seems like most astros fans are in the same boat as me. If we can't get enough of a discount on Aiken to sign Nix and Marshall, meals away and take the #2 pick next year.

If the Astros decide to walk away all together, I will not be upset at all. After the Appel disaster, we can't waste another top pick.

It was never meant to completely prevent it though, but to get control of the process. Teams can't just run around throwing bags of cash at anyone and everyone. If they want to over pay somewhere they either have to get creative elsewhere or pay a penalty for doing so.

If y'all don't sign Aiken, y'all still get the #2 pick next year because of the 40% offer.

My question: Is that #2 pick in addition to the Astros existing first round pick in the 2015 MLB draft? Essentially 2 picks within 5 picks of each other in the first?

I realize that. I'm just saying I don't think that happens. I think the most likely scenarios that will play out is Aiken either walking or agreeing to a deal around $6 million. I don't think he signs for less than that. His agent is going after the $6.5 that they originally agreed upon. There's also been reports that Marshall wont sign for less than $1.5 million. If that's true then the only way he leaves is Aiken signing for WAY less than he's asking for now.

Again, I just don't see that happening. JMO.

Yeah, we would end up having two top 5 picks. Hell, potentially the first and second pick.

Our slot poll will be huuuuge next year, if we don't sign Aiken.

I don't think the Astros are going to offer near that amount of money. Of course they are strongarming Aiken and his advisor, but there are reports that the Astros are sincerely concerned about the health of Aiken's arm. I don't think they are willing to pay him that much more than 50% of his original slot. They're looking at this in a risk/reward stance and there's a real risk with Aiken in their opinion.

Rumor is that Mac has raised his number to around $2 mil now. But still, it won't take much for the Astros to match that. I think they can sign Aiken just above $4 mil and be able to offer Mac around $2 mil.
