So we most likely won’t be getting him correct?
No idea based on any inside information. But from what I’ve deduced, he wants to play, so probably not. Not that he wouldn’t play here, but why not go to Ole Miss where there’s a clear opening and in the last 13 months have both won a CWS and produced a 1st round pick at SS. Seems like it’d make the most sense for all parties.

One thing I can tell you, he and his family do NOT like playing behind someone. If he’s not starting, then he goes elsewhere. Wanted to play at CHS, went to EHS so he could start.
I’m sure all this is true, but one thing I can tell you is that’s not unique. Especially for a SS. Just about anyone good enough for us to consider taking likely has a similar background. Just part of the deal these days.

It may make things slightly uncomfortable, but I think JJ will put winning over anything else.
I’ll continue to hammer this point, but Jay’s got to weigh winning in ‘24 vs. maybe winning in ‘25 and beyond. What’s best short term may not be what’s best long-term.
That said, I’m with you, I’d lean towards taking him and letting the rest shake out later. A true freshman taking over at short and hitting .360 against PAC 10 pitching is pretty special and would definitely play in the SEC. But gun to my head, I’d bet he lands elsewhere.

I agree with you 100%. My concern was always him going wild in college. He was always sheltered so much. Hell the whole family moved to ASU like right close to him too. He wasn’t even allowed to stay the night at places growing up. Only certain ones. Figured when he hit college he’d go wild.

The part about Dugas and last year is true. Would love to have him here. Since entering the portal he’s spoken to CJJ but was asked to play at 2B. He is a SS and said no thanks. Hill is looking elsewhere because he is and should be a starter. No real competition there with Braswell. Come back and talk to me after he announces. You could say CJJ missed out here but it was out of his control. Covid year recruiting and a bunch of personal BS with Dugas and family. Don’t know why they don’t like him other than maybe Hill is the better athlete?

If we brought in another SS it would have probably pissed off Guidry and the infielder recruit we have coming in

.317 might be better than .246 but is it really when .317 was in the PAC-12?
First college HR was at Mississippi State. I believe that’s in the SEC.

I was thinking Guidry at SS, Hill at 2B. Milam will get every opportunity to earn a starting spot and he will definitely get ABs. Nippolt had 55 without Jay even trying.

Hill is a good player
Sounds like the only issue is whether he is willing to earn a spot or not

You know just enough to make most of the people here think you have some kind of inside track on this, but your post above tells me you don’t have a clue since he was at Episcopal before high school and didn’t opt to go the Episcopal over CHS because he was already there.

Time to do the Saban way. Take recruits that other teams want

zero to do with it
If they thought the kid was better, they wouldn't hesitate.

How they handle Guidry is super important imo. Not just him individually, necessarily, but what he represents. He had a hard number of $3 million that he wouldn’t come off of, despite getting offered $2+. And he’s a draft eligible SO. The pitch to him had to be come in, compete for the SS job as a freshman, at worst you’ll play 2nd and pitch, then move to SS as a SO, have a great season, and we’ll have developed you into a 1st rounder that signs for $6 million rather than $2. Or something similar.
You watched Jay Johnson for 2 seasons and you think he is going to coddle Gavin Guidry? this is a clown take even for you

Not what I’m saying at all. It’s not about Gavin Guidry. It’s about the next Gavin Guidry. And I’ve watched Jay Johnson enough for 2 years to know he’s likely to take Hill to give the ‘24 team the best chance to win even though it may not be best for the ‘25 team and beyond. I trust him as much as anybody in college baseball, but his obsessive desire to WIN NOW may tempt him to make decisions for short-term results instead of weighing them against long-term ones. I don’t know what the perfect balance is, and I trust him to find it, but it’s really hard to find it. His not being willing to coddle may serve him short-term, but hurt him long-term.
Again, I have qualified this and will continue to, it’s not about 1 player or 1 situation—I WANT Hill—I just think this is all new terrain and coaches have to consider and weigh things differently than they ever have. It’s not just as easy as taking the best players available all the time. Because those beat players might eventually not continue to be as easily available.
You know what I’m saying. Don’t act like you don’t.

But you could use that reasoning to say it wasn’t fair to recruit Braswell because Guidry is waiting in the wings
You continually recruit the best players you can get and let it sort itself out.

This team, even with Thompson’s improvement was a less than average SEC infield. We lost a big chunk of offense. There are two mif positions open. And with Tommy being hurt a couple times, opportunities at 3B. We won’t score as much next year. So we must be significantly better next
We are downgrading at 1b so we better folks around him.

This is silly. You’re wayyy overthinking things. This is a premier landing spot for players and we will always recruit the best regardless of someone’s fear of getting beat out at a position. If someone doesn’t want to come in and compete for a job, Jay won’t take them and he shouldn’t. He talked countless times about the selflessness of this team. That’s the kind of players he will push to bring in. If bringing him competition pisses off someone, let them leave. You don’t need a cancer in the locker room. As long as he isn’t making promises to people and then not following through, I have no problem with his approach.
