A few in the media have mentioned that although LSU would be his first choice (big Tiger fan), they don’t think there’s enough room to take him with all of the middle infielders the Tigers will have on the roster. I would love to have him here.

How in the world is ss already locked down with Braswell who got benched with South Carolina or Guidry who was pitching all year?

Bet on himself and compete

It’s not locked down, and I’m sure he’d be more than willing to come in and compete. If he doesn’t come, I think it’s 100% because Jay doesn’t offer him. Which sucks, because I think he’d wind up starting.

But like he would have to weigh the risk/reward of his gamble, so would Jay. The reward would be the 2024 LSU baseball team would be better with Hill on the roster. The risk is how does adding another MIF from the portal effect guys like Guidry or Milam in the future? You can’t keep selling high school kids on coming to LSU to be the next Crews if you keep going with easy portal bandaid for open spots every year. At some point, you get a reputation and they start going elsewhere.

Sure, all’s fair in love and baseball and whatever, but Guidry turned down $2 million + to come to Baton Rouge. Just using him as an example. All situations are unique. But how much would Hill have to produce to make it worth risking getting that reputation? Some guys like White and Montgomery are no-brainers. Guys like Hill—who, again, I think would wind up being the best MIF on the roster—are harder to weigh. I think last year spooked Jay a bit. I bet if he had it to do over again he would have waited and not jumped on Braswell so soon.

Ole miss lost ss recruit to draft and a juco ss that decided to decommit plus they lost chatagnier the 2b to portal

Wide open to playing time at ole miss

LSU has several incoming fr coming in along with braswell with valuable sec experience plus Guidry who wants a shot and nippolt who can still give you solid defense

Just doesn’t seem like Luke is destined to be a Tiger and that’s unfortunate

He should have entered the portal earlier

Of course you are going to get downvoted for stating a likelihood. Hill is likely headed to Ole Miss and will play a ton for them next year.

You guys remember when we probably had the slowest outfield ever when we played Stony Brook? This guy right here wants to bring that memory back. High hanging in the gap balls that somehow don't come down falling to a glove. That's about you'd get with Jones out there.

Hill doesn’t just want to be a Tiger. He is a Tiger. Showing up to Omaha in LSU stuff while on the Arizona State roster is something we would do.

I think you put him on the team and let things work themselves out in the Fall. A very probable outcome is Hill in the opening day lineup and Nippolt in the December portal.

Rick has been known to blow things up. He’s thought his kid was MLB ALL-Star material since I’ve known him and Luke played at Marucci. Luke is a great ATH. But the one area he’s got to work on is mental toughness. He’s no Bregman or Nola in that category

He's most likely headed elsewhere.

I think that’s what I’d do too. But I also think another probable outcome is you’d find Guidry or Milam right there in the portal with Nippolt. Or the summer window.

How they handle Guidry is super important imo. Not just him individually, necessarily, but what he represents. He had a hard number of $3 million that he wouldn’t come off of, despite getting offered $2+. And he’s a draft eligible SO. The pitch to him had to be come in, compete for the SS job as a freshman, at worst you’ll play 2nd and pitch, then move to SS as a SO, have a great season, and we’ll have developed you into a 1st rounder that signs for $6 million rather than $2. Or something similar.

Now, you can chalk it up to “shite happens, may the best man win.” And that will probably play for a while. But how many Hills do you have to bring in before the Guidrys of the world stop buying what you’re selling? Again, I’m not saying not to bring in Hill. I think he’d probably be the best MIF on the roster Day 1. But will the production you get from him be worth what you eventually lose either via high school guys going elsewhere or the portal? Because I think there will wind up being much bigger casualties lost to the portal than Ben Nippolt.

Not saying either decision is right or wrong, just pointing out there’s a lot to consider more than just “what will make the 2024 LSU baseball team the best.”

I think has a lot to do with it more than anything.

It sucks that you have to factor all that in, but the reality is you do.

So we most likely won’t be getting him correct?

One thing I can tell you, he and his family do NOT like playing behind someone. If he’s not starting, then he goes elsewhere. Wanted to play at CHS, went to EHS so he could start. I’ve known them since he played 9 yr old travel ball (Marucci, then Traction, etc).

Just look at it as a positive either way. I'm guessing that we would get him if we wanted him. If we don't get him then it means JJ has complete faith in our current roster. If we do get him, it means JJ thinks he is an immediate starter and will improve this team. It may make things slightly uncomfortable, but I think JJ will put winning over anything else.

Personally, I would rather have him. Give a combo of Hill/Guidry a full go at both middle infield spots. Milam waiting in the wings, and Braswell in the role Nippolt was in.
