A big question of this offseason, as we’ve come to learn, will be how LSU is better able to disguise what Perkins is doing, knowing that a big part of teams’ plans will be how to slow him down. As a result, LSU has run Perkins a lot with the inside linebacker group that includes Omar Speights, Greg Penn and West and Whit Weeks.

While the spring practice viewings to this point have mainly been individual drills, it is important to note that Perkins has been lining up with Speights in a basic 4-2-5 defensive drill where the players essentially line up and sprint at the beginning of each practice. He’s also been working some with the JACK linebackers as well so that remains an option, though the focus does appear at least in the early weeks, to be more centered on the inside linebackers.

Learning that position will allow Perkins to tap into a completely different look that offenses will have to be on high alert for. What makes Perkins so great is his athletic combination of strength, power and speed to not only race past o-linemen and make plays in the backfield but stay glued to receivers and running backs crossing the middle of the field. It opens up a whole avenue of playmaking including breaking up passes, forcing fumbles and recording interceptions.

It will help LSU disguise Perkins a little bit better as well, which should only aid in his efforts to be one of college football's most dynamic playmakers. Imagine Perkins attacking offensive line's from all angles of the front seven throughout the course of a game in 2023 and also showing off his range sideline to sideline in tracking down opposing offensive weapons.

He’s dominant on the edge. But moving him around is gonna make him even more dangerous.

Just b/c on 1st and 2nd down he'll be inside doesn't mean on 3rd and long, or other obvious passing situations he won't be on the edge. If anything the offense will have to locate him every play.

Him inside allows another rusher to be in the game. Imagine the delayed blitz or stunts that can be used with him in the middle.

It helps his draft stock from a versatility perspective but he’s so good at edge. It’s kind of like the Cowboys with Micah Parsons. Yes, he’s a “LB” but his greatest impact is rushing the passer.

Yes because he wasn’t dominant in every game as a true freshman means he’s been figured out.

I think The more he can process the better he will get (starting at a really high floor)

Obviously there will be games we want to spy him and situations where we want him to just pin his ears back and go after the QB. He was dominant for a reason

But we also want him involved when teams are running between the tackles and lining up in big sets.

Offenses will give looks where this makes sense. He’s not going to stay inside.

Harold Perkins generational talent is acceleration and closing speed. He is built different in this regard. It pops on tape. Being in the middle gives him opportunity to utilize it from anywhere. It is the right move.

You might be right but it's good that he's learning it in the spring. We can always move him back if it doesn't work. But last year there were too many times we had to take him off the field

This only works if the other backer can be a guy who can scrape tackle to tackle . I think Omar has proven that he can be that guy

He was just so raw last year. Hopefully they are spending extra time reviewing tapes and improving his discipline.

He lined up as a nickel cornerback a good bit last year. I think he can play any position, and offenses won't know how to prepare.

So the guy is so good you stop teaching him how to play football?

Why even try to max his skills just let him do the same stuff as last year cause teams will never adjust to it?

He will be a hybrid linebacker and use his skills to roam the field from side to side, and in the offensive backfield!
