Beat Missisppi St. in the 7/10 game, won two more, then lost in the championship. A few weeks later we were in the elite 8.

That team was all heart. They were a joy to watch and represented us well.

If they don’t inexplicably dissolve at the end against Indiana , they go to the Final Four in New Orleans and win the whole thing. That Smart did that, and was a Baton Rouge native made the whole thing worse. And C’mon Fess, it’s a free throw. It’s free. Just hit the bucket, get the win and get on the bus....

To me, I think the key to any success LSU will have lies with Rachal and Sampson. Rachal is the ONE guy who plays with an attitude on defense and the glass. Vs. USC he grabbed 13 rebounds. Vs. MSU he had 4 steals and deflected several other passes that turned into seals for other guys.
Sampson is the ONE guy who has the explosive athletic ability to match just about every other guard in the SEC. The question is always "will he show up and play tough, smart, team basketball?" He was the difference vs. MSU and it started with him busting his arse after loose balls. He also played with effort on defense and I don't think it was any coincidence that Saturday was LSU's best defensive effort of the season...by far.
Those two can give LSU big minutes because LSU's two big guys (Reath and Epps) are strictly offensive threats. Relying on them to control the paint on defense and the glass is a wasted effort. Sampson and Rachal can be difference makers if they want to.

It's really hard to believe the 1987 team made the tourney. Like this year's team they were 8-10 in regular season SEC play, and unlike this year's team they did not have 7 wins vs Top 50 opponents. And, the last regular season SEC game was a 62-100 shellacquing at Auburn.
No doubt the strong SEC tournament run, and the previous season's strong NCAA run, propelled them into the tournament, and that team was a joy to watch in the Midwest Regional. Can't believe they couldn't finish off the Hoosiers in the regional final.

Also in the 1987 SEC tournament, Bama and UGA won their first game and Vandy got blown out in their first game. Just like this year.
It's happening.

I went to every game in the 1987 sec tourney in the Omni. Beat uga in triple ot to reach the finals. What a fun time in LSU b-ball. Watched us cut down the nets the year before after we beat KY in the Omni.

I’m with you, man. I just want our players to play defense and offense with an attitude. Act like it means something to you!

LSU vs Georgia in the 1987 SEC Tournament was the first sporting event I ever recorded on a VCR.
I was six, and my dad had to go to a wedding but didn't want to miss the game.
We came home and watched it...LSU 89, UGA 88. What a game.

And back then, there was no one texting you a spoiler or accidentally seeing it on the internet or the bottom line of SportsCenter

Exactly. Today, you would have to go "off the grid" not to see the score, especially because it was an exciting game.
